Sleep

When your out driving, you can pull into a truck stop and sleep right? Yea, thats what I thought...but are there rules about just pulling off to the side of the road and sleeping there are no stops nearby? If your not blocking traffic, is there problem with that?

You are not suppose to pull off on the side of highways unless it is an emergency. You can also get tickets for parking on the ramps. Best to find a safe lot, truckstop or rest area. Now; that can be a challenge sometimes.

Tickets

Every morning, we see state police waking truckers sleeping on ramps in front of no parking signs. That includes ramps into or out of rest areas that are full. Drivers need to plan their trips, and stop early before the truckstops and rest areas fill up. Don't drive until you are asleep at the wheel or your log book is maxed out. I generally operated in about a seven state area and Ontario. I had "secret" places where I could always find parking. Know your territory.

Plus let's say your on the side of a highway or ramp and some one aint paying attention, you'll get a rude awakening, when they rear end you. Safety!!!!!!!

It's not safe to drive when you're sleepy either so it's a matter of weighing which is more dangerous at the time. Of course, if you get a ticket for being responsible I guess you toss that into the scale of "the right" choice as well.

I know in Indiana you will get a Ticket for sure parking on the ramp (I heard it like $500 but could be a trucker story, but getting a ticket is almost a for sure thing in Indiana) but you get into IL they don't seem to be as bad about it. It really just depend on the state you are in. Pulling on the side of the road? never do that. At least make it to a ramp and park there if you are going to do so.

That's the thing that works for me. I've gotten to know the truckstops, rest areas, and customers where I can go. Rarely do I have to settle for a poor spot; but it seems like a lot of truckers do.....

Also....two weeks ago I got a late start (loaded late and early appointment) and ended up on I-95 in Virginia late at night. No parking on ramps there, truck stops filled up, so I pulled through the weigh station, pulled around back, walked in and asked the officer if I could shut down for 10 hours. "Yep, feel free", he said.
Can you believe I was the only truck there all night? Slept like a dead man.
