Scheider or USX for rookie team
We just got our CDLs and are talking with Schneider about their team program for rookies. They'll give us each $3,500 sign on bonus and .32 cpm for 6 months then .36 cpm. A veteran driver said he would prefer USX for pay. Haven't talked to them but their web site uses the usual "up to .36 for first 8 wks, then up to .48". The key words there are "up to". Schneider says the same thing with higher numbers than what we'll actually get. Would like your opinions on a good choice for a rookie team. (please, let's not turn this into a discussion of whether or not to team. We've already considered that issue).

I have a suspicion USX may have more coast to coast freight than Schneider but it's just a "feeling". I'd value a good supply of better, long freight much more than a few cents more for questionable amount of decent freight. Teams need to be somewhere where they spend the bulk of their time hauling "true team freight", not somewhere where they are used routinely to correct internal dispatch or logistic problems and getting somebody out of hot water, while you two deal with little 900 milers and long unload times.

FWIW. a guy I went to school with isnt happy with USX. He teams with his brother. Guess he's having trouble getting miles and hometime isnt what he was told it could be.
Good luck whichever way you go.

Were I you, I would avoid USX and Schneider. USX has a sliding pay scale. My brother spoke with a USX team driver, and the driver said he was only making .16cpm. Have you thought about TMC?

I could be wrong, grusco, but I think the signing bonus, as well as the pay per mile, may be a bit of a ruse. Did you ask if the .32cpm/.36cpm was to be split between you and your team partner?

I don't think a team is concerned with how much regional and intermodal freight Schneider may have. Nobody denies Schneider probably moves more truckload freight than anyone, but US Express cut their teeth on CA to NC/SC freight not too long ago and Schneider is focused on the shorter, high[er] dollar freight that does teams very little good. I understand Schneider does have a dedicated team board, but again just because it needs a team, doesn't necessarily mean it's good team freight and given all the regional moves that Schneider does, it only stands to reason they drop a lot of regional balls and expect nearby teams to fix it ... good for Schneider, bad for the teams.
