Hazmat Endorsment Time

Hi All,

I am new to trucking and will be going to take my written exams this week. I will taking my hazmat exam and was wondering with all the new regs how long it will take to actually get the endorsment. I live in Texas, have a clean driving and criminal background and have had a background check by the FBI, State and local police in the past for a handgun permit.

Any experience would be appreciated.

Actually, the X endorsement now falls under the Patriot Act umbrella. In Tenn, I had to complete a request form. Then I had to log on to [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link. , and schedule an appointment for fingerprinting and background check. The entire process cost about $100 and took about 2 months.

They perform the background check after you pass the test. After about 6-8 weeks, the Department of Homeland Security will send you a letter informing you of the results.

When I got mine, I was given the endorsement before the background was performed, and if anything were found I would have had to surrender it immediately. Now, you don't get it until after you are cleared. I believe you have to bring the letter from Homeland Security to your state's MVA. Then you get your license updated to show the Haz-Mat endorsement.
