internet wireless "hot spots" on the road.

I just bought a laptop with a wireless connection built in. our house happens to be in a hot spot where the laptop can connect to the internet for free to this wireless connection (not sure where it's from). but i wonder if anyone out over the road finds that they stop their truck to rest and can pick up any internet hot spots so they can use the internet? i wonder if the metal shell that makes up the cab shields it? or what?

No it does not shield it, Hot spots generally are only 500 feet unless amplified.

Laptop internal antennas are very week at that, should look into getting a decent external antenna for better reception.

I built a directional antenna that I can receive peoples wireless home network signals over 2 miles away and have really good signal strength.
All depend on line of sight how far I can receive with it.
Free Internet....
(I do this just for Fun cause I have Sprint EVDO)

So bottom line look for a decent external Antenna to improve hot spot signals cause internal ones suck.

Or get wireless Internet threw a cell provider and don't even worry about hot spots.

all the major truck stops are hot spots. Most of 'em have fees. The only t/s I've found that offers free wifi is Bosselman's. However, there is this website that might be useful to you.... [LINK POSTED BY MEMBER] Only Members Can View This Truck Forum Link.

Hope this helps

Wireless Cards

I have a EVDO wireless card for my laptop. It is provide by my Alltel company, but is available through Verizon also. I works ANYWHERE in the USA for a fee. I can access any hotspot site also, BUT, accessing free site are usually NOT secure site. I prefer not letting others access to me laptop through unsecure sites.

I agree with bandit...The "free" ones are not "secured" and that bothers me. I'm with Sprint and it works well with me. And I like to know my info is encrypted.
