I did find this.. Found this on another forum .. if this is the definition of color blind I'm good to go..


49 CFR 391.41(b)(10) - Summary of Regulation

"A person is physically qualified to drive a commercial motor vehicle if that person —

Has distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye without corrective or visual acuity separately corrected to 20/40 (Snellen) or better with corrective lenses, distant binocular acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes with or without field of vision of at least 70º in the horizontal meridian in each eye, and the ability to recognize the colors of traffic signals and devices showing standard red, green, and amber."

* The required tests measure visual acuity, horizontal visual fields, and color.
* Visual acuity is measured in each eye individually and both eyes together.
o Distant visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in each eye, with or without corrective lenses.
o Distant binocular visual acuity of at least 20/40 (Snellen) in both eyes, with or without corrective lenses.
* Field of vision of at least 70° in the horizontal meridian in each eye.
* Color vision must be sufficient to recognize traffic signals and devices showing the standard red, amber, and green traffic signal colors.
* When corrective lenses are used to meet vision qualification requirements, the corrective lenses must be used while driving.
* A medical examiner, or optometrist may perform and certify vision test results. The medical examiner determines driver certification status.
* vision is disqualifying.

They did a color blindness test at my DOT physical.

there are different types of color blindness, not all is red green color blindness, i can see red green fine, but blue and lighter purples are the same, black and dark brown seem the same. have you ever been tested ?

I am color blind and it has never caused me any issues driving.. But it appears my career may be over before it begins ..

They used to give you a waver, if you could see enough gray scaly to tell the difference between the red, yellow and green lights. A friend of mine had one back in the seventies. You might check that out on google.

Yes .. and I am red/green color blind.. I can see stop lights and the colors just fine .. it shades of color I have a problem with .. I am pushing 50 and I have been driving since I was 16.. I was tested in the military back in the 80s and found out ..

This really bites not knowing for sure one way or the other.. who would I need to contact to find out to get a test and if I could get a waiver or not ?

Check with a local Doctor that does DOT physicals. They should be able to answer your question.
