Just a few questions about past medical issues.

About five years ago I was diagnosed type2 diabetic. I was put on metformin and had to change my diet. Around this same time I had a sleep study done and was found to have severe sleep apnea. While all of this was going on the doctors and nurses were always asking question about my eating habits and activities. One of the questions was whether or not i was a drug user. I told the truth and informed my doctor that I had recently quit smoking marijuana. I had quit cigarettes about five years before this. There never was a drug test being that there was no need for one but I am assuming this was put into my medical records that i admitted to marijuana use.

Now jump ahead about three years and I had gastric bypass surgery. No problems from surgery. Have lost about 200#. Feel healthier then ever. Diabetes was gone the moment I woke from surgery. Sleep apnea gone within about six months.

My question is this. Do I need to worry about my admission to marijuana use come up in ant type of pre-employment check? Can the carriers look at my past medical records? I also worry that I may be denied because of the sleep apnea and or past diabetic history.

Should I disclose this info when filling out paper work?

    Thanks for any help.

I was sent a private message in regards to my gastric bypass surgery. Due to the lack of post by me I am unable to respond in a private message. So I will post my reply here in hopes it is seen by the person asking.

The diabetes is GONE. I feel great. Best thing I ever did for my health. The medical industry is looking at gastric bypass surgery as a cure for dietetics. For all intensive purposes it is a cure, they just don't understand why yet so they don't come right out and say it is. Even type1 diabetics can be cured. Many insulin dependent diebetics eventually come off of insulin. If you are thinking about the surgery i suggest you research it and I highly recommend it for anyone who is overweight. Hope this helps. And I didn't pay anything out of pocket. All paid for by insurance. Many insurance company's have no problem paying for the surgery just because it will add years to your life and save them money in the long run.

DO NOT MENTION PAST......past medical, past surgery at least.

as for the sleep apnea, YOU WILL BE questioned about this when you go for just about ANY DOT physical. they will determine THEN if you need to go for a sleep study test.(another one, or if they ACCEPT the one you had already)

now, if you are on any CPAP(??) machine, you WILL HAVE to verify that it was issued by a doctor, and YOU WILL HAVE to take it with you on the road.

There is no point in Congress passing privacy laws if you volunteer all your past medical issues to the company. So you were a pot head. Your past pot use will not effect the way you drive.

So as long as I don't offer any info they will not be able to look at my past medical history? I know there are HEPA laws, but are we required to sign waivers so our medical history can be looked at?

I no longer have sleep apnea and I do not believe I would be singled out as someone at risk for it. My current weight and neck size are not a sign for this.

My concern here is my admitting to using to my doctor. Can that be found with a back ground check?

Not unless you tell them the doctor and give permission.

This was the answer i was hoping to hear. At this point I am not diebetic, do not have sleep apnea, and have no concern with passing drug test.

    Thanks for the help everyone.

You will have to answer the first medical question on the medical form.

Any illness or injury in the last 5 years?
