TWIC card question from a newbie.
I have held a security clearance before, And these are good for entering ports as I understand it. A friend told me It was also a very good thing to put on a job application. I have an appointment Wednesday to finish the app process, and It's 125 or so bucks. Are these worth the time/effort/$$?

For me, yes since it also can get you into some military base and other sites. Your past clearance will not matter, having some government clearance is better than not have any.

If the carrier you work for does port work and it's OTR drivers go into the ports, it's invaluable, if not mandatory, but many drivers will never need a TWIC.

save your money. when you get hired on at any company, if they want it or require it, you can get it later and till then they just will not send you where you need to have one, or at the very least, you will have to have an escort...whoopie....
i think it's a waste of money. i will NOT renew mine.

Thanks good info, seems mixed. I have a job driving a cement mixer now as a temp thing, just so I could work and take my time to find the right newbie company. In an effort to "get my ducks in a row" this TWIC thing came up. I told my boss I have an appointment 100 miles away at the port of LaPlata to get a clearance. He asked "why do you need a clearance" I said "It kind of goes along with the medical card for my Class A CDL" He said "Oh you have a medical card?" I said "yea". He text me an hour later "You have a class A?" I lol'd a bit.

And if you've ever been into a lot of the ports around the nation, you'd probably wish you were not allowed in again once you make it out. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you're not missing much if you're not allowed into a port.

I frequently go to ports and oil distribution centers that require TWIC cards and I have no problem getting in without one...Only asked me once, I said no, haven't been asked since...

I have a TWIC card. I have a felony also. I have a retired Air Force card. I use the Air Force card to get on bases and shop. I have never used the TWIC card but I got it anyway. If you drive reefers you are most likely to need it in a port. I use the felony ever time the company tries to screw with me. I know how to bend the rules.
