| Selecting a Training School I am trying to select a Training School. From what I hear, I don't want to sign up with a company's school and be locked in. I am from Orlando and we have Roadmaster, which I am reading where the time spent in the truck can be minimal. There is also National Truck Driving School near St. Augustine. They give you the books to study beforehand so that you can spend more time in the truck, or so they claim. Any help is appreciated. |

| i went to ASU in Newport Ar. they have housing available for about $300 for the 3 week course. it includes about 70 hours B.T.W. range time(that means yourself) and AT LEAST 10 hours road time(that means yourself). i was very happy with the course and instructors. they teach mostly backing excersises on the range. the school is only about $1500 if you pay cash.

| I looked into Roadmaster in Orlando but wasn't impressed. Take a look at Mid Florida Tech at the corner of John Young and Oak Ridge. They have an 8 week course for less than 2k. I'm gathering info about it. From what I've found so far it doesn't seem bad but I still need a lot more info. There phone number is 407-251-6047. They are on spring break right now and it is hard to get through to them. I keep getting an answer machine but they will return your call. |

| You may want to try calling CFI. They do not have a contract and have several schools they use. Depending on which one you can pay as little as $1000 at Central Tech in OK. CT is an exceptional PTDI certified school. Also check into Schneider. Yes you will have a contract but their schools are also PTDI certified and respected. Cost to you is $0 if you finish the commitment time.

| Be careful Wherever you go, make certain of a few things. You will find that many driving schools adhere to PDTI standards for their syllabus, yet aren't members of PDTI. The PDTI standards call for a minimum of 160 hours of instruction. The hours are broken down into classroom and Range/Road/Lab. Classroom and labtime with a few or several students at a time is fine' if not best. However, when it comes to Range and Road instruction, you will be best served IF you are the ONLY student in the truck. Too often driving schools will put 2 or 3 students into a cab, and have them share time BTW. (behind the wheel) If that school's curriculum calls for say 60 hours of Range/Road instruction, and you are 1 of 3 students in the tractor, YOU often, ONLY get 20 hours (1/3) of 60 actually BTW, but are credited for the full 60. A good price is great to get, but make sure you get good value... Another very important aspect of range/road practice is getting some of it in the dark. Anyone driving for a living WILL at some point be driving before sunrise and after sunset. Don't get shortchanged and left in the dark !! Best wishes to you.. |
