Changing CDL from one state to another

Is it a hassle to change your CDL after moving from one state to another? Do you have to go through the whole testing process again?

in "most" instances, you just surrender your current license to your new state, and you get to take another pretty picture of yourself.........

your new state should be able to check the validity of your license with-in seconds..........oh wait.........we are talking about the DMV, right.......??

I think I remember seing a question on an (pre)application or somewhere else, asking if the applicant has a license from more than one state. I always thought, " Wow, wouldn't that be kinda illegal? " Just collect licenses from multiple states in case one gets dirty.

I have been told though that for schooling purpouses, a person attending an out-of-state school can attain a learner's permit from the host state, (with-out establishing residency) then after passing the road test, a Class A license is granted, but the driver has to transfer back it to a home-state license within 30 days. This info comes from the school's program co-ordinator.

This depends on your particular state. Some states do not recognize third party testers and some states require that you receive your CDL from your state of domicile. This means that if you do go to an out of state school and get your CDL in that state you still may be required to go through the entire testing in your state for them to issue you a CDL. The FMCSA defines domicile as:

"State of domicile means that State where a person has his/her true, fixed, and permanent home and principal residence and to which he/she has the intention of returning whenever he/she is absent."
