I am a Student at MTC and will be accepting one of the many offers I have. Does anyone have any information they could share with me on which Companies have the best (275 hour) training and how do I go about getting a qualified Trainer instead of a dipstick dilly? I am also a woman but I don't have to have a woman Trainer..just someone who is a "Great Trainer". I am leaning towards Werner.

I started out debating between CR England, Werner, Prime, Schneider, Roehl, and Swift. I've probably read a thousand reviews about each company, and I'll try to list some of that info here from you.

Note: I havent worked for any of these companies, so this is not PERSONAL experience.

I personally narrowed down my options to two companies: Roehl and Swift. You'll hear negative comments about both of these companies, but it's not nearly the amount of bad news you hear from companies like Werner or Prime, or even worse: CR England.

In the end, I'm choosing Swift...its a mediocre company, mediocre pay, and mediocre milage. I don't have my hopes very high because I've already accepted the fact that the first year is going to be a struggle no matter where you go. There's nothing "great" about Swift, but then again there's nothing great about any company that exclusively hires new drivers.

Roehl seems to pay and train better than the other companies when it comes to rookie drivers. The training is reportedly superior , and they apparently start you out with higher pay (cpm). The only downside is that Roehl doesn't pay for your housing during training, but since you are already training at another facility then thats not a problem for you. Also, I'd like to say I've heard a few Roehl drivers complain about having to wait several days or even weeks for their mentor training to begin, and since Swift is a bigger company, it simply has more mentors available and therefore there is less of a waiting period. That was a huge dealbreaker for me since I wish to start making money sooner rather than later.

I expect all of these companies treat male and female drivers the same as any other major carrier. If you are worried about sexual harassment, I've heard various Swift drivers on this forum praise Swift for standing strong behind a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to that stuff. The only other thing a female driver should worry about is whether you can physically handle a flatbed, in which case you want to make sure the company you choose has has a van fleet option.

Long story short, i think it's a toss up between Swift and Roehl. New drivers from both companies get around 2000 miles per week in a van, and around 2500 if you're pulling a flatbed.

In the end, I say you should go with Roehl...Swift would be a second choice. I'd avoid Werner and CR England altogether.

Have you considered other companies? May, Transam, Melton, and Millis have had far better driver reviews than Roehl, Werner, and Swift combined. They all hire new drivers, pay higher cents per mile, and have more reliable staff and managers. Smaller outfits will be better than bigboy outfits nine times out of ten.

Checkout this link...you can find reviews of all the companies I mentioed, and more...

Stlvance - I seen you went to MTC and from St Louis. I'm also from St. Louis and interested in getting into trucking. How was the school? Have anything you could share whether it be good or bad.

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond to my questions. I think I need to look around a bit and will consider Stevens.

Thanks so much for helping me in this big decision. I haven't even heard of the names you mentioned, but will check them out as well as the link you sent. My biggest problem is that I don't have housing right now, so unless I have someone to start with right after graduation, I am stuck with few choices. I will contact those other Companies ( Little Guys ) and see what they can offer. Never know unless you try! Thanks!

Hi M Brown, I am attending MTC and love it! I have no mechanical background but I can name all the parts needed in the Pre Trip Inspection. I have passed all my Tests and got my CDL Permit in 4 days with all the endorsements ( but Hazmat, as I am from out of state) . The place we are staying is somewhat on the awful side but I am not here to vacation and goof around. I bought some 409 and got some quarters and cleaned it up as best as I could. I keep to myself and just study, study, study. The Instructors just ask you do what they tell you to do. If you fail, it is from your lack of caring. I have been backing the truck in a straightline and only got a 2 out of 5 but I don't worry about it because I am just learning and I know if I keep doing what they tell me to do, I will get it right soon. The first week was really rough and the hours I put in were close to 20 a day for 6 entire days. This followed a 2200 mile trip on Greyhound! :biggrin_25526: I researched programs and went with the one I KNEW would teach me and get me out on the road, making money. I start Week 2 this afternoon as we are a big class and need to be split for more truck time and another new class started this morning. FYI, there are still a couple of students there from classes before mine and they work with them till they get it done as long as they maintain good attitudes.
I just know, I am getting the best training out there. CR England accepted me to their school and I turned them down and went to MTC. Good Luck to You and hope to see you soon out there on the fabulous Highways!

well when i came to mtc back in january i already had a few years of class b driving behind me so a lot of the stuff was just going over what i already knew. i guess the worst thing about the school was the crappy trucks we trained in. they are old werner trucks that have lots of miles on them which makes shifting them a bit of a problem. i chose them due to location mostly. i didnt have to stay in the nasty hotel. its been that way for years though. they will get you trained enough to pass the cdl test and then you learn what its like to drive otr from whatever company you decide on.

Thanks so Much for your information. I have been calling a few recruiters and filled out some more applications. I did call may Trucking and the do not have female trainers at this time and they will not put males/females together. I really appreciate everyone's input and encourage anyone with an opinion to state it, please.
