I don't know if this is true or a truckers tale.

I always heard that in NY City a tire thumper with a leather strap attached was a weapon, and one without was a just a tire thumper.

I keep a straight claw hammer next to my drivers seat. It can have many uses, heh-heh:biggrin_25520:!
At a recent entry to Canada thru Sarnia, Canada customs went thru my truck. The officers told me they were looking for weapons, I have a CCW permit, by the way. They did a very thorough look see, and didn't even raise an eyebrow at the hammer. Being a former General Contractor, I can tell you, it's a construction grade tool, not one likely to be found in a soccer mom's home tool kit. Very nicely made for a tire thumper, and has "other" uses as well.:biggrin_25526:

I have a nice LARGE flash light in my truck by the seat for checking my load in the dark. :D

And I've never had my truck tossed by DOT. Must be cuz I yes sir and no sir the dude with the gun. And I've got nothing to hide, they are taught to profile folks that way.

Yep, and I never got out of the truck without it at night, sometimes in the daytime (depending on where I was), unless I was going somewhere besides around my truck. (You never know when a "tire" might need to be thumped, LOL)

    'Tire', 'head', what's the difference!:biggrin_255:

As long is it isn't blood stained DOT shouldn't give anyone grief...

You're right though, having that thumper in your hands can keep riff raff away.

They are made/sold as a tool to check your tires hence the name tire thumper.

I heard about a steel hauler who was checking his load. A large man with a short length of pipe asked the steel hauler whether he could use the pipe to tighten his load binders. The steel hauler said, "Sure. How much do you want for it?" The large man said, "Everything you have."
