WOW is the best way to describe the training I've been getting. I started with my mentor on Monday the 19th. He called me a couple of days before and asked if I could meet him in Baker, Or. He bobtailed down to meet me. He made a point to explain to my wife how things would work and how much I would be driving. This was so she didn't worry. He also talked to her about how much money I can reasonably expect to make in this profession.

I drove over 9 hours my first day and at day 5 I've driven over 2200 miles, backed into places I never imagined I would, and learned a lot about what the job is really about. My mentor is a great guy, Marine Sgt, and we get along just fine. If you have questions ask and I'll try to answer when I have time. Most times I don't have internet. I'll update this when I can.

BTW, I'm driving a KW T700. Nice truck! Projected finish date is about Jan 1st.

Great to hear! One of my buds had an ex military mentor who was a lunatic. Wouldn't allow A/C usage in Arizona and left him at a truck stop for four and a half days while he went on hometime in Yuma. Did I mention he took the keys too and it was like 150 degrees inside the truck! It's really the luck of the draw. I'll be headed to swift most likely some time soon, as my LTL contract expires in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I'll be as lucky as you...

Today was day 6 and I drove another 9 hours. The terminal kiosk says that I've been dispatched to over 3990 miles this year. We stopped at a terminal to eat and shower and off we go to try and pick up our next load. From there we're off to Portland, OR. Nothing else to really report.

Make sure you let the mentor program heads aware of this mentor. Truly quality mentors who understand the personal side and the concerns others at home have (especially where new drivers are concerned), in addition to the trucking side are far and few between. IMO, there's three quality levels of mentors and the top level are probably less than 10% but should be well compensated to keep them doing the job because mentoring well requires a LOT of special skills, talents, and traits.

I hope everything works out well. it's tough the first few Christmases away from home for all concerned but you just have to suck it up. Hopefully you'll manage to get home near Christmas if for even only a few hours.

Agreed. A great trainer creates an exceptional student. Exceptional students make their companies $$$. ###### trainers make bitter students. Bitter students quit pre maturely with 3-5 grand worth of debt to be collected. You'd think recognizing and compensating good trainers would be priority one, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Another one of those great trucking industry mysteries I guess...

Day 7- More and more driving. I finished the week after bumping up against my 70hr limit. I ended up with just under 3200 miles. I have to reset and then push on. My butt is dragging but I've learned a lot.

We made it to Laramie, Wy and stopped for the day. I'm out of hours and my mentor has to sleep sometime. It's way too cold to go out and jog. I can see that if a person doesn't get into some kind of exercise routine it will be a quick trip to high blood pressure.
