The other night I was crossing the border from Montana to Idaho via I-90. Long story short, I was too consumed about everything that was going on around me that I failed to notice one of the scales that was tucked away on the right corner of the mountain pass. I am sure it was open cause I saw other drivers pulling in after I realized what I have done. I am usually really good about stoping at scales, and I never run illegal or overweight. I am sure its been done before many times... But how bad is it if you accidently miss a scale? It was an honest mistake.

On a side note, I've never actually been called in. What do they check inside? Manifest? DVIR? CDL, dot medical card & logbook I assume? How anal are they? What do they usually ask you? Also, are we allowed to abbreviated state names when making status updates in our logbook? I usually write mine out, but I've heard that you can abbreviated state names.

If they didn't come after u ur fine. Guessing the scale wasn't photo enforced. Well u better hope its not.. u get points and a nice ticket for it. Normal they just ask for cdl, dot, bol and where ur going. Yes u can abbreviate states on long books.

That is actually a jump scale right there, I know exactly which one you're talking about. It's an easy one to miss if you don't know its there.

Westbound lane right before you climb Lookout Pass (I think). It was dark out. I thought I saw signs for it before hand, but the reflective writing on the signs was faded from all the corrosion.

    What is a jump.scale?

cant say i havent done the same a few times... not much excuse for it usually, but it happens. ive never been "chased down" for blowing by one (think maybe happened 4 times) and nothing ever happened as a result, so i dunno "how bad" it is, lol. when asking you to come into the scale house, they are either going to ask for your license, permit book, log book and/or bol... they may or may not (more often not) give you an inspection form . they might also inspect the truck. id say being asked to "come inside" results in lvl 1 inspection (driver/logs) maybe 5-10% of the time and truck inspection <1% of the time.depends on who you drive for and their "rating". and yes you can certainly use state abbreviations

It's a portable weight station, there isn't an actual pad scale there. Very very seldom is that scale actually open. When it is they usually don't weigh trucks, just look at logbooks and bills and send you on your way

if he's talking about that scale at mm13 in montana. it's always open cept for a few hours at night and maybe weekends too.

and there are a few signs warning the drivers. from both directions. of upcoming scale in LEFT LANE.

if yuo missed the scale. then you weren't paying attention to the signs to which the first one is about 5 miles away.

it's an actual scale house. that sits in between the two directions of highway travel. it doesn't have a camera. it's more of a basic shack. i've actually stepped inside a couple of times. and both times the people working were just bullcrapping. not even paying attention to the screens. so they probably didn't even see you blow by. it's basically the same setup as the first one you hit coming up the 90 from wyoming. that's the one that's been desserted. it now has broken windows.

You need to drive back to scale immed & turn yourself in. your picture & truck is on the most wanted!

:biggrin_25523: one time, I passed by an open scale. they came after me. that was a fine, I never want to pay again. just daydreaming & drove right by.

If they don't come after you then don't worry about it but I wouldn't want to make it a habit. I saw a guy in the left lane of a 4 lane (I40/85 WB in Mebane, NC) think he was blowing by the scale. I was slowing down to enter it and wondered what he was doing and knew that I didn't. Just as we got to the scale the light turned closed and the State Cop came running out with his hand holding his hat on, jumped in his car and caught the guy before he got to the exit for the Petro which he was trying to get to before being caught. I doubt the Cop had much of a sense of humor.
