Hey all. My first time posting. I'm just starting on this quest for knowledge. I'm starting school in April here in Tacoma, Wa. That Swift training school in Portland scares the heck outta me, so I'm enrolling in an independent school with good recommendations from my Brother in Law and two other friends. I've heard all the horror stories about them. Swift claims to be pet friendly once employed and the school I'm starting at is on there approved schools list, there aren't too many other choices to work for out of school unless anyone nows of a company. (It will save me some phone calls!!) My main concern is bringing my dog. Its him and I only, no family to worry about and I don't care about home time either. We are full time RVers and am willing to go anywhere since I've been just about everywhere in this country. I just want to work hard and go through the trials and tribulations and get the OVTR mileage. I have a place to put him up for as long as it takes while in training. Money's not the main issue for me either, although I won't work for peasants pay. I'm paying for the school up front also. One other obstacle..I got a DUI back in 2000. Any thoughts and advice would be appreciated. I realize I need to do some research, but thought this forum might give me some insight regarding pets and a DUI. The Dui is the only ticket I've had in 25 years plus, but I realize its a biggy. I'm 50 y/o and ain't gettin any younger. Thanks...just throwing some thoughts out there....

I am not sure what the DUI will do, although being 7 years ago, I am sure there are jobs out there.

As for pets, a large number of trucking companies allow pets, usually with a deposit of around $500.00. I don't have a specific list, but many of the company websites will specifiy if they have a pet policy, as for the others, I would call to verify.

I drive for Swift Transportation and they do have a pet policy...500.00 deposit with 250.00 non-refundable...As for the DUI 7 years ago...don't have a clue...with you not wanting to get home that often, you would probably get the miles with Swift...Good luck in your venture.

  7. You sound as you aree in same lifes situation as me. I too will be living out of a RV with no one to get home to so I want as much road time as Ican get.... I have found some companys are not very receptive to that thouhgh.... one got a little testy with me and said we will not hire you till you move and are established in a residence.... Sounds a tad controling to me as I am just a free flost ... free spirit type.... but I get out of school in a few weeks and then will look deeper..... I too have forked out my own cash so I am beholding to know one .... have got a couple of pre hire commitments from a couple of companies but plan on weighing out all my options before signing on the dotted line .....

Most companies don't worry about anything on your MVR over 5 years old, most, not al. Some companies bar things for life, things other than DUIs,too.

Large companies are charging a pet deposit or banning them outright, some cite safety reasons and others cite damage to the truck, some both. You need to find a company that allows a pet after training to get a year or three in experience, and then you can look for a better situation if you want, provided you keep your record clean. I don't know any particulars because I don't have a pet, though I'm thinking about a Myna or maybe a turtle.

There are smaller companies that allow pets without as much hassle, but most of these don't take new drivers. Get the experience and your horizons will broaden. Good luck to you and take care of yourself and your best friend.

Anybody else? I'm kinda in a similar situation but I don't have a DUI/DWI. Maybe one old, no ticket accident and one old moving violation, neither in a CMV. My thing is I can't prove experience as I ran with small fry owner operators and fly by night construction outfits and can't reach 'em. I could prove I ran through a CDL school and have held a CDL in the 15 or so years since. I have the tag-along RV but a regular address and my dog. I just spoke with Swift and they said I could just take a road test and go with a trainer but absolutely no pets. I was asking about a company driver slot. J.B. Hunt said no pets for company drivers. I'm by Albany, NY if that matters but could tow that RV anywhere once hired. Anybody know the easiest way to tow a little trailer with a big rig? I'd probably have to weld a king-pin to a little I-beam/channel iron and lock it to the pintle hook. It's got the round 7 contact connector with the center pin type plug. I could then tow it bob tail or with a converter dolly as I have double/triple endorsement. I could put a tow bar on a pickup truck and tow that combo, provided the chicken coop didn't red tag me. Braking would be the only issue. Thanks.

I worked for werner and had a dog the whole time. They never knew but they do allow pets but its $250 non refundable but they are required to make sure that if you have a pet that the a or heat works. But if they fire you you are respnsible for making sure you find and pay for transportation to get the pet home.

Thanks ladyTrucker2go! I just need to prove one month's experience in the past 5 years for them and jump out with a trainer or go through a whole new school or training program... I'm not sure if I can track down any of those references... I might be better off teaming up with an O/O who's not under some carrier's restrictions.
