What is the point of having all of those holes for adjustment on your trailer if you can't legally be past 41 feet?

I don't think the forty foot rule applies to most states outside of California...

If your axle legal here in CA your good everywhere else. And it is for balancing out the load. I have hauled permit loads that required my axles to be over length, but they still have to be 34000 or less on the tandems.

I've found a good chart on each states requirements for tandem spacing and weight limits. Most of us know the limits but this could be useful to some people.

But I'm still not sure why there is so much room for adjustment on a box trailer when really you only have what seems to me.. About 3 feet of legal adjustment. From about 38 to 41 feet

    LOL...
What about the states that allow 43 feet? Im guessing your company told you "never go past this hole"... Thats because they dont want you doing any math. Some states you can be over 34K but not over 80K gross. Some states you can be over 41 feet but not over 34k. You get the point, its confusing to some people so companies just say "never go over 41 feet".

Yeah guess I'm overlooking those states, thanks for pointing that out. As far as my company.. Never had any instruction from them. And schooling certainly never addressed sliding tandems at all lol. My trainer was pretty useless too. Fortunately, I pick up on most things pretty quick by myself.

Some places you deliver to want the axle clear back for their dock and the trailer to be the right height for each other.

Just make sure you aren't too long for the jurisdiction, or, in the case of Maryland at least, too much overhang(too short).

Well I left the shipper and elected to scale out on down the road since the load was only 43k. I set the tandems 2 holes behind the 41 ft mark and took off. After I scaled I was 34.540k on the rear so I slid three more holes back which I'm thinking is too far. Guess I'll find out what dot thinks in the morning if the scale is open.

Yes lots of places want the tandems all the way back, get that all the time. Thanks for the info.
