I was wanting to hear from people who have personally went through either one of these programs and share their experiences. I am currently employed with ups as of 6-7 years now and ready to take the leap into professional truck driving. Its something I have always wanted to do, and have decided to take the leap and go for it! I am SUPER NERVOUS about hitting the open road so please feel free to give any advise, to help combat these nerves.

Don't be nervous! It's a great career! If you can put up with UPS for 7 years, this OTR will be a piece of cake. You will get many replies from drivers who have been through Driver Solutions & Central Refrigerated. While you're preparing for the transition, apply for a passport & TWIC. Best wishes.

If you go with Central Refrigerated, you won't need a passport or TWIC... Just so you know...

Central Refrigerated would be a good choice; many positive comments on here about the company.

The passport & TWIC, tanker/hazmat endorsement would still be good to have; when other job opportunities are available, you will be ready. When you're ready you can make a move to tanker/hazmat company and start making $60K - $70K per year and many make much more.

Yeah, i really have not read anything bad about central. i guess im just nervous due to the fact i make a pretty decent wage and have good benefits with ups. But they do not treat there employees with any kind of respect what so ever and they want you to be fearful of losing your job 24/7. Im not bitter towards the company its just fact, and im sure you can talk to any upser and they'll agree with me 100%. But my fear is, leaving ups after being there so long and failing the driving school. But this is something that's ALWAYS interested me. To be honest that was the sole reason i even applied with the company, was to drive truck. I really wasn't sure any other way to get behind the wheel until a fellow Co-Worker left after 12 years of working for big brown! To attend a driving school, until he had left i had know idea there was such thing. Last i heard he loves driving truck.

If you like a decent wage and good bennies, stay with UPS. Trust me when I tell you that pretty much every company that's going to hire you rigt out of the chute isn't going to treat you with any more respect than the brown clowns do. On the otrher hand, if you're truly unhappy, go for it! You'll pass the the coure.I'm 100% positive of it.Lots of folks flunk the driving test the 1st time. In my class of 8, 5 did. (I was fortunate to pass on the 1st go-round) You just re-take it'thats all.Good luck with whatever you choose my friend.:biggrin_25525:

Exactly. Especially since you've been there for 7 years. Heck the UPS truck driving jobs are very sought after in the driver pool. If you are really set on driving why don't you stay with UPS and get your CDL at a private school or community college and then try to transfer to driving for UPS? What do you currently do there and what are your motivations for wanting to become a truck driver?

    Lady K Thanks this.

The thing with UPS is they are a Union job and everything they offer is based on seniority. About the only time they will hire off the street is during their peek season then they kick them to the curb. Honestly to even get behind the wheel youre looking at a 7-10 year wait. to even see a feeder run which is the 18 wheeler its about a 25 year wait(at least in my location). Plus they treat you like garbage. I work for a man currently who refers to himself as
"big daddy" and prides his self in cutting people right before they are due to retire. UPS is truly a cutthroat company ran by share holders and manged by tyrants.

OK, but again, what do you do there? Package handler, driver, clerk of some kind? And if you're looking at 25yrs for feeders, did all of your feeder drivers just start?
