    Hello All,
Well I graduated CDL School and heading to orentation next Monday. The Company I`m going with "Colonial in Knoxville TN" sent me a letter telling me what and where and it stated that I needed to bring a Pulp Thermometer along with a few other things. I believe it is used to tell Temp for their Reefers. Do any of you know exactly what I would need one for and where I can get one. I dont want to try and get one online in case there is a shipping problem "week away". Is this something I can get at a Radio Shack or some other chain store? How much? Thanks for your advice and wish me luck.

A pulp thermometer is to get the temp of the load you will be picking up.You can pick them up at any grocery store just make sure that it has a range of -20 deg. to +70 deg. They are not expensive usely a couple of bucks.

somthing like these are all you need.

What you are looking for is a pocket thermometer. A restaurant supply place,or kitchen department in a store usually has these. Be sure to get the one that only goes up to 90-120 deg because with reefer freight most is around 0-30 deg. The type that goes up to 500 deg is no good for you for reefers. What you need this for is in case a customer refuses a load be
cause of the temperature of the freight, you may need to "pulp" it. Pulping
is sticking a pocket thermometer in the product itself to check the internal temp. The product is not neccessarily always the same temp as what the trailer unit says on the display, pulping can save from having a load refused at the customer if the themometer reads within the range of acceptable temperatures.

    Hey Bear,

What school did you attend? A guy from our class when went with Colonial too, and said he is getting tons of miles...but he was getting frustrated with the 10 weeks of training. He had been a large box truck driver in the past, and can't wait to get on his own. He lives very close to you, between Columbia and Centerville. Good Luck!!

Yes they do have a longer training than most but starting new to Trucking, Colonial and myself also feels that training is everything to a newbie. Their training pay is not great but better than most at $475 a week. I attended CCS in Fall Branch, TN. They told me it would be "up to" 70 days of training. Another good thing I liked is that their Trainers have to have at least 5 years with the company. I just hope I dont get a wierd O. They do get you the miles, thats the main reason I went with them and to be honest, their the only one I belived as far a recruters. Yeah, your buddy does live close to me....good to know.

To test a pulp Thermometer, put it in a glass of ice water and it will read 32 exactly, if it doesnt twist the face while holding the little nut on the stem to adjust to:biggrin_25514: 32

I have a raytek MT-4 temp gun...It reads from -18 to 500 degrees, and has a laser sight...will this be acceptable for pulping product???

Well, maybe. This is because if you haul something like lettuce Heads (or watermelon), the surface temp is NOT neccesarily the internal temp- unless the product has sat in your running reefer for about a week, but that's another story!
