I havnt had to keep track of my hours for 4 years because I have been a local driver. I have read/heard that some changes have been made over the years. My question is, does a computer specifically designed to track hours exist? I know there is software that you can put on to a laptop or whatever. What Im looking for is some type of device that is dedicated to just keeping track of the hours.

All I know of is your log book and the Drivers daily log program.
The drivers daily log program you can hook up GPS to it and well I guess it tracks your duty status (not quit clear on how that works).

If you are an o/op I guess you could purchase the program Weirner uses and it does the logs for you on the computer. Quit costly though. The log program works just fine if you have a lap top

Sorry I can't be more help

Truck stops sell log book calculators for under $30. You might check them out.

Logbook calculator? Hmmm, never heard of it, drawing lines and basic math must be to tough these days. :biggrin_25513:

If it's the one I am thinking of, I believe it's actual function is re-capping your hours. I tried it out and the only value it has is to the truck stop that sold it to you. You enter your hours each day, but once entered you have no capability to review previous entries and eventually we all make mistakes, so what is your option? Well, you recap manually to see if the numbers the calculator is giving you are good. It's a ticket waiting to be written and just one more example of the crap truck stops try to sell to gullible drivers, like me.

Dieselboss is a Forum Supporter so I believe it okay to give you this link. On his website there is a program exactly like you're looking for. I only glanced at it, but it look interesting. The link is: www.dieselboss.com

Thanks for the recommendation dynosaur. :biggrin_25519:

We are extremely happy with the new log and with our collaboration with Eclipse on this "alternative" to the more complicated and more expensive log programs. It looks like the paper log so there is very little learning curve. It's just a matter of clicking or dragging the same lines that you draw on your paper log, but with all violation alerts built in of course.

It has one printable screen for the driver and one for the DOT guy so that he will always see a correct "no violations" log sheet. Rules have also been recently added for Bus, Short-haul, and Canada.

Anyone can download it and use it for free for the first month so there is no risk either. Make sure to register it (also free) to unlock the ability to print or to use the GPS to see what city you are currently near (as long as you have a GPS receiver connected to your laptop of course.)

Here's the link to take you directly to the correct page for info http://www.dieselboss.com/software/eclipse_logbook.htm

Nothing like bringing a post to life after over 2 years.

I do not use a recap or a calculator. I know in my head how many hours I have.

It was a post referencing the unit. You can change the hours you put in by using the edit key. I used one of these when I first started driving under the old laws.

See, for somebody like me just starting out, a program like DieselBoss's program would be perfect. I always seemed to mess up in my head during school (we were required to keep a log) how many hours I would have left in real life. Now, I understand that it's basic math, but for some people getting into the industry, it's a lot of things to remember with the HOS. I know in probably even a month or two it'll be second nature to me, I generally pick things up very quick. I will definately give the program a try, thanks!

    Dieselboss Thanks this.
