Can only drive 11 hours in a 14 hour period. Cant work more than 70 hours in 8 days, which is driving and on-duty not driving combined. Must have 10 consecutive hours off duty or sleeper berth or a combination of the two to reset your 11 and 14 hour clock. To reset your 70 hour clock you must be off for 34 consecutive hours. This can be sleeper berth, off duty or a combination of the two. Starting in July a 34 hour reset must have 2 periods between 0100 and 0500 hours. There is something else about being off duty or sleeper berth for 8 hours to gain the hours back for that day since you went off duty or sleeper berth but I dont ever mess with that. These are the U.S. hours of service rules. Canada and Mexico are slightly different.

You can work more than 70 hours in 8 days or 60 hours in 7 days, just cannot drive if your total hours exceed the 70/8 or 60/7 whichever applies.

Lines 3 and 4 count against your 70 so please explain to me how you can work more than 70 in 8 days?

Because there is no rule saying you can't be on line 4 after 70. You just can't go to line 3 anymore. Just the same you can be on line 4 after 14 hours a day but you can't drive anymore.

How would you avoid the 34 hour reset then? Just stay under the 70 in 8?

Yes , but why would you want to ? Many drivers run up close to 70 hours in less than 6 days then take a day and a half off . Many don't do a restart because they no longer have hours . Taking a restart and starting fresh is easier than running a daily recap .

11 hour rule : After coming on duty from your last 10hr+ break you can drive no more then 11 hours before having to take another 10 hour+ break.
14 hour rule : You cannot drive after the 14th hour after coming on duty. Period. Nothing extends the 14hour clock (except an 8 hour split break, which is a bit beyond newbie HOS.)
70 hour rule : After accumulating a total of 70 hours of combined driving and/or on-duty time (lines 3 and 4) in any 8 day period you can no longer drive. This one gets a bit complex with the 34 hour reset and keeping track of the last 8 days, but it's not bad once you get used to it. Recaps are your friend here. Note: A days as it counts for HOS is from midnight to midnight.
