I am in the process of getting my application approved, and my recruiter mentioned he wants me there June 4th. I cannot make the date. I would need a few weeks to tie up loose ends at home.

Every week. But whether they have spots open that week is another question.

Just tell your recruiter that you need a little more time, and mention whatever date will work better for you. It shouldn't be a problem.

You have to wonder why all these "good " carriers have to be hiring more newbies every week .

Let's keep it on topic shall we? Prime. We have about 6,000 drivers, around half of them have relatively low experience levels. For whatever reason one might choose, there's a fairly large group of them who don't finish their second year. Some move on to greener pastures (which as we all know aren't always that green,) many find that OTR trucking isn't what they expected from watching Smoky and the Bandit too frequently. Others within the wider group leave for many reasons... failed medicals, tickets, personal reasons, health issues. Most of the student driver orientations have 50% washout before they even touch a steering wheel due to background and health problems. Another 25% won't get their CDLs... we don't just hand 'em out like many others. So there aren't all that many actually getting through the gate to training.

Back to statistics. About half of Prime's 6000 drivers are experienced, meaning there isn't that revolving door. Since there aren't all that many making it out of the instructional phase of training, that also means there isn't much of a revolving door here. Sorry to burst your bubble.

    I'd say when
there IS a revolving door .
However , you make a significant point with the high percentage of washouts . That is something wannabes need to be aware of . Trucking is NOT a job "anybody" can do as too many believe .

It's not so much a revolving door as it is a problem with over inflated expectations, home sickness, significant others rebelling over the driver not being there, can't deal with the stress, etc. It's also not a job that fits many new drivers idea of what they want their life to be. You don't see that in the non-training carriers, because most folks that move on to other driving jobs after training want to stay in the industry.

I agree . If you've noted I'll recommend PRIME over other starter companies for newbies and much of the reason for high turnover for start OTR carriers are the reasons you mentioned . Wannabes really need to understand the high turnover rate and the high risk of attempting a driving career . Too many waste money at a CDL mill only to be rejected by carriers .

I mention that all the time to the folks who want to blow $$$ on a driving school. At Prime they give a student a week on the truck to decide to pack it in... no obligation to Prime. After a year of driving solo... the whole tuition is waived. There are no payments- unless you blow out the door early. That's really hard to beat.
