Just got accepted to start school on July 1st in Denver (Keensburg). Trying to get things together so I will be ready to roll. Wife just got me a new Galaxy III phone and a new Samsung lap top. Also just bought a Top Dawg dash cam and I am going to Wal-Mart today to get some bedding and a few polo shirts so I look somewhat professional . I have a good pair of leather work boots and a almost new pair of Nike shoes. Thinking maybe a bunch of new white socks might be a good idea. Gotta take care of the feet. Oohhh , maybe even a couple pair of new work jeans too.
I am so excited to get my new career started. Have been wanting to do this for a long time but my kids were little. Now my kids are young adults and I am a young grandpa. I only turn 50 this August.
If anyone has any advice on what else I might need as a rookie , please post. Positive comments are very welcome.

Taking care of your feet?, How much walking do you think you'll be doing? And if your just starting out it's best just to take ONLY things you'd need for staying in a motel. And a pillow and blanket for the truck. When you get your truck home you can add all the rest of the things you want to take with you.

lol , I don't plan to do a lot of walking but I do plan on doing some sweating. I realize that will only taking what I need for school , but when I get my truck home.... I want to be ready. Don't want to have to make a long shopping trip right away. Just want to be prepared.

Good Luck..... I always CRINGE when a newbie's pathway into the trucking industry is through a company sponsored school (On the Hook for tuition). Keeping them dogs healthy is very important....keeping em laced up all day everyday will present issues. Never wear white socks...stick with black socks as they never get dirt.. LOL !

I agree with jbourque, dont spend any money till you know that driving is what you want to do. It's a very hard life out on the road and no school can prepare you for how it is out here. For new drivers the stress level is very high. and Sweating? oh from the stress.

Good luck... I hope you do well in training and in your new career... For me the training part was the hardest part of all of it. It felt like an eternity having to go out with a trainer but once I was done with that part there are some days I wish I still had one around lol... how long is the training with stevens?

Stevens has a good orientation with very charismatic speakers. Pay attention to them and you'll be off to a good start. At 50 you've got to consider you body is starting to wear down and exercise will be important, especially considering you'll be doing a lot of sitting. Pack some dumbells so you can work out. Maybe even a jump rope for cardio. Get out and walk or go running if you're able. Healthy eating is essential as well. Stay outa them fast fake food joints. Put a fridge in your truck if you can so you can load up on healthy salads (broccoli, kale, spinach, etc etc). Sitting all day takes a toll on the body, especially as you get older, so that there's my advice.

Oh and stay alert, lots of folks die every day doing this job. It takes time to get the feel for driving long hours without having to pull over for naps. Of course coffee helps. Hope this helps. All the best too ya!
