I have a standard Class D license in Illinois (one everyone gets for regular auto driving). I believe some states label this type as C. I want to get a job driving a Sprinter or other small truck (something that does not require weigh stations and would be an automatic transmission). I spoke briefly to a recruiter for Panther and he was saying I need a C license with air brake endorsement to drive. Is that right? I don't think Sprinters or small trucks even come with air brakes, and I think they only need a regular D license to rent from Enterprise or Penske. Could he have misunderstood my D license being the same as C in some states, or do I truly need the IL C license (and air brakes)? If I need the higher IL C, where can I get the training and vehicle for the test cheaply? If I can avoid taking the test entirely, and just drive for a company with a D license even better. Any advice?

You only need the class c if you will be hauling hazmat. If you are under 26k gvwr, less than 15 passengers, and no hazmat, you only need a standard license.

You shouldn't need a cdl to driver a sprinter by law, but if the company requires it you will need to find one that doesnt. -
Can you name a few that would hire with a standard license? Note that I do not own equipment, so I'd be at the mercy of a fleet that needs a driver. When I can afford it, I may get a vehicle of my own, but that will be a year or two. -
Check with courier companies .
