I drove through one yesterday for the first time in a long long time (in my car).
Just curious to hear about driving through roundabouts in a truck. Are they a pain? Difficult? More dangerous for trucks than conventional intersections? Any tricks?

Depends ... if there is anything in the middle ... if not I just drive straight through them.
-
did this roundabout go clockwise or counterclockwise and 1 or 2 times around????
-
you just drive right over them. cuz they aren't built for trucks. and that's the reason they were designed in the first place. to keep trucks out.
guess that idea isn't working out too well.
trucks have a right to be on the road to deliver the freight. if the people don't like it. then move. -
Everyone but one I've encountered are designed properly and you have plenty of room. Most have two lanes with a left thru lane and right turn lane to get out. Many times you have to use both lanes and wait for both lanes to be clear. 4 wheelers are bad about sneaking in your space so you plan and watch accordingly.
The one I had a problem with made me laugh. It was in the middle of nowhere surrounded by farm fields. I think in WI? I guess they were planning on building a town around it? Anyways the construction workers were there putting the final touches on their brand new round-a-bout. It was a single lane with a sloped concrete curb edge. I took the maximum arc possible and still curbed their brand new concrete. I've seen a bunch of eyeballs with that "oops we screwed up look". -
They are ok as long as they are not 2 lanes.
Since most of the time I still need both lanes the 4 wheelers get confused.
The only thing they are good for...If you go the wrong way by accident, easy way to get turned around. Legal UTurn. -
Wisconsin is big on the roundabouts. Funny fact about roundabouts....more accidents occur in them as opposed to an intersection but the accidents are minor scrapes instead of 50 mile an hour broadsides. Even the brand new ones in Wisconsin on major truck routes are insufficiently sized for trucks. You can make them easily but you will use both lanes. I don't mind them one bit but they would be annoying to navigate several times a day.

they need to make drivers watch videos of how to successfully do a round about before they get their drivers license, just like the old yield sign ask them what that is. Most don't know.

Prevent running signs or a stoplight, and slow people down, I like them in a truck, but I drive lots in WI, where if they aren't there, the stops get blown at high speed, usually.
I know where there are lots of them, some have been around for years(US20 at Angola, IN is one).Last edited: Jun 23, 2013
