When I begin my career as a OTR driver, I have to figure out where to claim residency, as I will not have an actual home of my own. Also, I am not so certain a relative will allow me to claim their home as a residence. I plan to just rent a motel room for the infrequent time off. There must be other drivers with this issue. Would love to hear from drivers that have either had this problem come up, or know someone who has and can give advice on solving the problem. Do they rent PO Box? What about the mail that builds up? I would hate to rent an apartment that I will rarely ever see. Thanks.

When I started out I was in your boat as well and started at the pumpkin patch and then Melton. Both allowed me to use their address as my "home" address and they would keep my mail at my main terminal to pick up when I came through.
Now I have heard many simply use a PO Box, so that's an option as well.texasbigbird54 Thanks this. -
A lot depends on the state you have your CDL in. In some states, it's getting more difficult to not have a real, permanent street address.
You used to be able to get away with a post office PO box in some states, or a UPS store box in others.
My state now searches the address you give them on a computer database, and rejects UPS store addresses.
If your terminal will let you use the address, and collect mail for you, (Never actually ran into a company that would do that) then try that.texasbigbird54 Thanks this. -
CR England employees can use the Salt Lake terminal for mail.

We just ran into this with on of our guys, he's recently divorced and said he just wanted to work for a month or two at a time and then get him off somewhere nice for a week, so far so good, HOWEVER, we did just find out that because he has NO legal residence that it will kill him for claiming per diem for the year, as "he is NEVER away from home, the truck is technically, his home"
It was suggested that he send his daughter a couple of bucks every month for rent, this may or may not be a problem for some of you, but not being able to claim per diem is a HUGE tax hit. Just a heads up!

It is against the law to use a P.O. Box as an address for a CDL.
You can use a U.P.S. mail box because it is not a P.O. Box they give a street address and a lot of OTR carriers allow you to use their address.texasbigbird54 Thanks this. -
thanx for the info i gotta call up my boss because ive been fluttering around with this Florida drivers license now for going on 6 friggin years i've been wanting a Maine address. never wanted a MA address jus for all the taxes they have on vehicles and such

You can simply eliminate the need for a PO BOX by having your mail come to you VIA email. That way your mail gets to you wherever you may be. The last thing you would need to worry about is getting through the house to get your mail. Me personally I use my laptop or smartphone to check my mail

Not a gbmnt PO Box... that doesn't count as an address.
UPS rental places work, they have a real address. they can also forward your mail.
there's a few other mail forwarding services also, several in South Dakota, and Escapees in Livingston, Texas. They mostly cater to the rvers, but good service.
