Maybe somebody has some advice. I just got my CDL, and have been spending all of my time researching companies. I would like to find one that is based in Ohio, or at least trains in Ohio and has regional work in the area. I don't want to have to go several states away to train if I can avoid it. I would like a company that will let me take the truck home so I don't have my vehicle tied up an hour away so my wife can't use it. That's probably sounding really picky from a newbie, but thought I'd find something. Any suggestions?

Basically all the mega carriers have terminals in Ohio. The Columbus area has Swift (southwest Cbus), JB Hunt (west side) and Schneider (Obetz/south Columbus), among others. I believe Forward Air has a terminal in Columbus, but I don't believe they hire unless you got some miles under ya belt. I know I'm forgetting tons of others Springfield has Werner and U.S. xpress. As for "based in Ohio" in terms of headquarters, I know there's Pohl transportation west of Dayton. There are tons of LTL if you're interested (R + L, YRC, Pitt-Ohio). If you want to do reefer, look up Arctic Express.

Check the websites Careerbulder and Indeed.
Panther Expedite is based in Ohio.
Unless their policy has changed, Greatwide lets you take the tractor home.
My former neighbor when I lived in TN drives for Falcon Transport & his truck was home every weekend.
Maverick hires CDL holders without formal schooling and home weekends. Orientation is in Little Rock.Last edited: Jul 22, 2013

Building Systems Transport is in the south central Ohio area. Panther is up near Medina I believe.
Here's a good list http://www.fleetdirectory.com/bylocation/Ohio.htm except it is missing a few. Continental Express (refrigerated) is based in western Ohio, I know there's also Spader Freight Systems in the north and Wooster Motor Ways (I believe they still exist).ohionewbie1 Thanks this. -

Knight also has a Ohio terminal.
Most companies will give you a grey hound ticket to go to training. So you wouldn't need to take the car.
Ohio is a pretty major area for trucking companies, check out the craigslist transportation section and you'll see a ton of ads.ohionewbie1 Thanks this.
