I've seen a few posts about people "running outlaw"... what exactly does that mean?

out law

that means allot of different things to allot of diffferent people. I my younger days it refered to a driver that owned his own truck and trailer had no authority because back then trucking was regulated and only way to get athourity was to by some ones that went out of business. So he would by a truck and trailer and haul what he could with out athourity or (bingo card) permitsa now days. so he was a complete outlaw. Now days it refers to a person who over runns there log book runs over weight or just breaks the 1 on 10000 laws the feds have put on the industry in the name of safty that only realy amounts to revenue generation for the state troopers. But enough of my ranting. Basicly any one that doesn't conform to laws.

Gypsy Truckers

"Outlaw" implies that a trucker is running without authority, overweight, out of hours, etc.

A different term from the old days is "Gypsy Trucker". I always had the most respect for anyone who was successful as a true gypsy. They typically hauled exempt agricultural commodities with their own reefer. In addition to the challenges faced by all owner-operators, they bought and sold the produce they were hauling. They had to bargain with sellers and buyers of fresh produce to take their profit from the line haul. I think it is a lost art.

Another term from the old days is "hip pocket operator".
