What I mean is, what (if any) are the differences in driving for a major carrier, VS a company that has it's own trucks? For the sake of this thread, lets assume a company like Wallmart, or one of the local supermarkets. Are these driving jobs better or worse than a major carrier??

You're referring to private carriers vs. common carriers. Common carriers haul freight of all kinds where as private carriers haul their own freight such as wal mart. Private carriers usually have set routes vs. common carriers who send their drivers in all directions to pick up and delivery loads. I would prefer to work for a private carrier and get to know the routes so that you always know the way in and out without the headache of having to get directions all the time and generally the people you deal with might be a little friendlier and for the most you're all on the same page and overall less b.s
better or worse depends on who you work for. You would have to decide what you want and what's important to you etc.
