There's a part of trucking I don't understand ...why is there so much negativity surrounding this career? I have found that its not the once respected career that it was. I myself am hoping to start trucking very soon, I'm 21, no kids, no responsibilities outside myself and student loans. So I figure now is as good a time as any right? I recently told my family of my decision, and they thought I were joking about it. Until I actually starting applying to jobs and schools, now it seems that I have no support anywhere. Every one is trying to talk me out of it, stating it's not what I think, I can't handle it, and a multitude of other reasons. Also on here, I see a lot of negativity and complaining. Alot of veteran drivers it seems, are bashing and turning away new drivers that have questions, for the above stated reasons. I know it's a #### load of crap that comes with this job, but what job doesn't have it? I would absolutely love driving down highways alone, enjoying the different foods and cultures of each city and state, the views of nature and architecture, and waking up in a different state everyday. I have been told that as long as you enjoy what you do, you will never work a day in your life. I truly believe I will enjoy trucking. I have tough skin, so I could handle DOT, shippers/receivers, company crap, traffic, or anything else. I absolutely love driving, and most drivers that I know make a pretty good living. Most have nice houses, a couple cars, and stay at home wives. I know that pay scale comes with experience, however, why not tell new drivers what would be necessary to gain that experience, instead of turning them around at the door. It's like veterans are afraid of the new fleet of drivers, and the change that comes with them. However, weren't you a new driver once upon a time? How did you feel about the reaction you received upon your entering the industry? All I'm saying is that I think the negative image that surrounds trucking is undeserved, in my eyes good far outweighs the bad. Any feedback from anyone?? Please no miserable, negative ##########, who think they know everything.

When I started driving back in 2003 its nothing like it is now.Drivers had to take a pay cut due to our sinken economy and many of those drivers haven't received that pay cut back.Alot of new laws ,the csa.Lack of miles the list is endless why so much negativityThe veterans aren't trying to sway the new drivers away from this industry, they just want you to know what you'll face in this industryYou really do need thick skin to succeed. In trucking its all about money.Far as companies are concerned you're just another driver..You can either take all the crap they pass out and be forced to like it or you can be a quitter, that's your choice. This industry will not bend over backwords for you.You cannot ecspect drivers to say all positive things about trucking when they've been thru it all.So you're going to hear good and bad in this thread.Problem with many ppl coming into this industry is they seem to know everything and the veterans know nothing. Many new drivers or students listen to only other new drivers and then say I should have listened to drivers with exp. What ppl have told you are true. Some may have been a tad bit over the top with their answers but trucking is nothing like the jobs at home.Trucking is more of a lifestyle rather then a job.If you plan of driving with only one thing on your mind, money, you'll never succeed.Trucking is the lowest paid carreer there is,espesially for new drivers. They take the heat the worst with everything. But we all have to pay our dues and someday if you pursue this carreer, you'll find that out.

Truck drivers are negative in general. It doesn't matter how good they have it. That's something you just have to get used to. I work somewhere that you can pull six figures and be home every night and our drivers try to make to make everyone think they have the worst job on the planet.

All the change in the industry over the years has made a lot of people not like the job anymore as well. Some roll with it and keep on enjoying it and some just can't take it. There are still plenty of us that enjoy the job, but being the internet you're always going to hear the bad more than the good. People don't go out of their way to talk about how good a day they had, but they'll be hear quick when crap hits the fan.

As far as the attitude with the newbies here, it's always been a problem. It goes in waves as well. Sometimes it seems to get real rough around here for 3-4 months then calms back down. There are always those that are genuinely answering questions rather than just talking down on new guys though. A lot of people don't make it through their first year and it just makes most people cynical about new drivers I think.

Good post! I certainly don't know everything, even though occasionally my wife says I think I do. Ignore the bitter, negative posts. If trucking is so terrible why do some veteran drivers still do it and bash the job at the same time; doesn't make sense. If you plan carefully, you can have the stay at home wife, nice home, nice car & job satisfaction. You even see veteran drivers on here bashing each other like spoiled children; they're in the minority though. Most truly want to help the new entrant drivers and each other. A forum this large, there will be a few that lay in the floor screaming, kicking, and holding their breath but most on here will go all out to be of help. It can be a very rewarding career, so go for it. If it doesn't work out then when the economy improves, you can change careers. At least you had the courage & adventurous spirit to give it a try.

Trucking is what you make of it - period. It can be a great way to earn a living or a nightmare but that is all dependent on getting your head straight. There are great jobs and not so great jobs but what I like may not be right for you. Don't worry about what others think, do what you think and follow your gut! Good luck!

Thanks Chinatown! I really respect your advice and knowledge, as I'm sure alot of others on here do too. One thing I have told myself is that i refuse to go through life wondering what could be. I'm sort of a third generation trucker, both my grandfathers, father, and uncle drove trucks (father and uncle still do locally). If I don't like the industry, then yes I can change careers later. However, I'm sure I would like it, I love change, I hate punching a clock and performing the same menial tasks daily. I have no desire to sit behind a desk or work in factories, driving is what I love, adventure is what I crave.

Very true! However, negativity has never swayed me from anything in my 21 years, and it won't stop me now!
