I had a thought...I start school in February...Go full time, get my cdl...Team with a O/O...
I don't have alot of cash to be saved up for making chump change training with a trainer...
I found a site findacodriver.com
Then get experience with that O/O and later on down the road (lol) buy my own truck if I so choose. Or go company. Will my "training" be less than 4-8 weeks?!
Can I skip company training and be a team driver with a O/O?!

sounds like you're trying to take a shortcut that might not be one
-
Well I have heard of "training" when your an experienced driver but its like a week or 2 when you switch companies. Just to make sure you know what your doing. Short cut yeah. But only to save the bank account from being drained...
-
Just get your training done, it's a hassle, but once it's over- it's over.
DriftingTruckDriver and Puppage Thank this. -
Yeah. Though it was a good idea at the time...Famous last words...

I suppose it's possible if you can really impress a local owner operator or small fleet owner who has a need for another co-driver and he feels good about his first impression of you as an individual and as a new driver. But he would want to know you have a CDL-A and a clean MVR and no felonies. Essentially you would have to be considered a qualified driver under whatever insurance policy they have in place. An in-person visit would be best if you've seen some o-o nearby where you live.
Ideally you'd be best fit for one who runs a mostly dedicated coast to coast lane where much of the driving is in the open spaces of the west and you won't be expected to bump a lot of docks (won't require too much devotion to backing training time). He'll know in the first 100 miles if you're going to make it or not.
But you would also have to be comfortable with the o-o yourself for it to work. Don't expect a lot of "guarantees" in the work relationship and don't be surprised at any turn of events that may happen down the road. A lot of shady characters around. -
It's going to be tough to get a job with no experience, just suck it up and mega carrier it up for a year. Schneider orientation is 3 weeks and your in your truck,450 a week in orientation.

Owner operators are very cheap, and they will make all kinds of excuses not to give you your money. If you quit then don't expect him to verify your employment. They will probably pay you on a 1099 and you have to pay your own taxes. Do it the regular way. Most of the guys who try to take short cuts end up having to do it the right way in the end. Suck it up and take the 300 to 500 a week and the trainer who doesn't take a shower, snores, and foot smell like a mushroom plant. You can do it. You might even learn something in the process.
900,000-tons-of-steel Thanks this. -
