| Pre-trip and Post-trip Just curious if when filling out the Post-trip at the end of the day, do you have to fill out a new daily inspection sheet or can it be done on the same log as the pre-trip? For instance, you do your inspection in the morning at 5:00am and mark in the Pre-trip box, at the end of the day at 5:00pm can I just check Post-trip beside the Pre-trip box and mark in the time it was done without beeing put OOS.....? |

| choctawblood09, Thanks again for your help. I am starting with a new carrier and trying to be in compliance as much as possible without receiving OOS from the MTO over here as they can be a pain in the as in Ontario..... When you do your log books and daily inspections, do you have a seperate book for each or does your log book have the inspection as well. My new books I just bought have the daily logs and inspections seperate. I could not find the Daily log with the inspection together. |

| In the U.S., the only written inspection is the post-trip. As mentioned in another thread, Ontario is tightening up on the written pre-trip. The more stringent pre-trip inspection rules in Saskatchewan and Ontario begin July 1, 2007. Drivers will now have to prove they have inspected specific parts of a vehicle. The new rules are very clear on when a vehicle can and cannot be operated, according to about 79 different defective conditions listed under 23 general inspection areas. A driver will be required to look for specific problems. U.S. truckers who are stopped in Ontario for a roadside safety check eventually could receive a citation if they cannot show the enforcement officer proof that they completed the new inspection. J.J. Keller & Associates is already receiving orders from U.S. and Canadian motor carriers for the new pre-trip inspection forms. Ontario will apply a six-month educational period for carriers to transition to the new requirements. |

| Ours is the opposite!! We must log a 15 min minimum Pre-Trip and then flag a 5 min Post Trip! |

| Is that your company, cause technically you could never do a true pre trip in 15. And why only 5 for a post, makes logs a pain, may as well show 15. |

| My companies thru the years want at least 15 on the pretrip and let you flag your post trip,but you should still write in at log off where you flagged it,as a post trip insp,if you don't write it in some states that require one like ma.,will ticket you for it.I just check it twice on my inspection and sign my name again over or under the first signature. Also a good idea to flag a safety check,meaning you stopped for a few mins to check the brakes and tires,dot likes to see a stop in between like 5 0r more hours driving steady,it could be a plus for you with them on a safety inspection,the better companies I have worked for with great safety records wanted us to do that,I agree it is a good idea to flag it so it shows you stopped to check. |

| Ok here is where many of you and I will butt heads! Sorry in advance! Now the DOT regulations is you must do a post-trip inspection and it must be done in writting. There is NO requirement for your pre-trip to be done in writting. Therefore my company requires you to log 15 minute post trip at a minimum. Now to your advantage is logging your post-trip on line 4 (not many companies are doing it the "smart" way) because if you can drive up to your 14 hour and then do your post-trip it is not interferring with your "14 hour period" so therefore spending 30 minutes to inspect your truck is/will only be eating the 70 hour as it would on your pre-trip the same. Also if you need repairs you can get your truck in the shop and take your 10 while it's being repaired. If you do a thorough pre-trip then you will have just woke up from a 10 and be down how much longer??? That could end up being a 34 as to a 12-13 down time (10 of that being your 10 hour break). Now is pre-trip's important?? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS But what can go wrong with the truck while sitting there?? THat's what you need to focus on and the lights etc. Now if you are driver who might go to Canada, your logs for the previous 14 days and current day must reflect a pretrip on line 4 and in writting. Just the opposite of the USA! As always you must follow company policy, but you might try and get your log department/owner to understand it is not the pre-trip that is required to be done in writting, it's the post. Most officers only look to see an inspection being done on line 4 and a pre-trip & post being completed. Yes you should write it in the "remark" section, although not required, but I WOULD! I just passed a DOT audit with a very complimentary so I don't see us being wrong?? Again make sure you follow company policy. I do hear they are going to start making sure drivers are logging line 4 on their post-trip. That is via drivers, and yes several of them at different times
