USA Dedicated Question

Hello,

I am pretty much a newbie when it comes to trucking. I am currently a "student" who will be going to get trained for his CDL sometime within the month or two (all depending if I get my CDL permit). Anyway, I want to do trucking for a year or two to get experience and all the endorsements to actually drive our church bus (I've been wanting to drive that antique FOREVER).

Anyway, I am heavily involved with the ministry here and by word of mouth I've heard that dedicated runs are probably my best bet to getting at least the weekends off.

I plan to work for Schneider National. Do you know if their dedicated / intromodal (sp) division would be a better bet with getting my weekend home?

Thanks,
Eric

Welcome, I'm sure someone will no something about Schneider, but I can tell you from my husband experience, don't put to much trust in a dedicated route per say just starting off. The good ones go to the guys who have put their time in. If you need money too, m-f jobs won't pay as well as long "outs". There are companies out there that will work you m-f though, my husbands will bring him in every friday if that's what he wants, we just need the money so he stays out longer. Good luck, do some investigating on here yourself too, there's alot of wise answers, you just have to look for them.

I know I am not in it for a bunch of money per se. Of course, I would like to get paid more than 400 dollars every two weeks. I currently work at a restaurant and it really doesn't pay at all.

From the truck stop perspective, there are a lot of truckers that have laptops and some kind of wireless ability. I thought that was interesting. They drive in their alloted 10 hours (4 extra hour duty) and do some school work online, well some do (using some kind of window thingy ma jiger that you plug into your laptop) and then they go to bed (or contact their family for a little while).

I read alot here that companies will tell of dedicated runs available then at end of school will tell you they are taken.
Just run OTR for a while till more open.
They knew that there were non available for a new driver, just a ploy to get you in the system.

Actually we have 11 hours to drive but we can not drive past or 14th hour being on duty.

If you plan on driving a bus later on make sure when you get your permit you also get the passenger endorsement and the school bus endorsement because I have seen alot of old church buses and they are old school buses the school bus endorsement is just to cover you butt in case you get the wrong cop that wants to be a jerk.

Also make sure that the truck driving school knows that you want your bus / passenger endorsements that is a seperate test that has to be done in addition to the tractor trailer test.

Atleast that is what they tell me here in Colorado.
