So I am 21 years old and want to get a start in the industry, most of the company sites that I go on recommend a ten year work history!!! I was wondering if there are any decent companies that will take newbies and train. I was considering getting my cdl and going for the oil fields but Im pretty far from the fields ( prosper Tx ) there are so much trucking opportunities out here but the requirements are killing me!!! thanks guys.

When they refer to a 10 year work history, this simply means as a truck driver applying for a job under DOT rules, you have to go back AT LEAST 10 years to name past employers/employment and/or unemployment periods. Doesn't mean you need to have been employed 10 years. 21 may be an issue for many carriers as many carriers require a minimum of 23 years old

Go to a community college , get your CDL license with the Haz-Mat and tanker endorsements...1st things 1st. You can't do anything til you get the license. Get the CDL's , then try contacting some of those companies. If you don't have a 10 year work history , I'm assuming because of your age , they'll recognize that as the reason. Good luck!

DOT only requires 10 years of commercial driving history, not all employment history (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/383.35). If you have no commercial driving history then you have nothing to list for that. The way they describe the requirement is often misread as "all employment history" as it is poorly worded. In section 383.35 (c) it says...

leading you to think it wants all employment history but in the following requirements it lists it only asks about commercial driving history.

Most companies I have seen ask for 3 years of employment history (other then commercial driving history) but that is up to each company as there is no DOT requirement for anything other then commercial driving history.

    Look down at (e)

How do you not know the driver is lying and withholding information? The only way is for the employer to require every day to be covered in order to cover their rear. It's not possible today with the CDLIS linked across the states but in the old days drivers would lose their CDL in one state and go to the next state and get another. Those type drivers today would attempt to falsify or withhold information on an application.

But yes Joel it's not an experience requirement but a collection of what you have been doing the past 10 years to make sure you aren't one of them drivers that lost his CDL in another state. Younger guys it's easy because many of them years you were in school. If you have gaps of unemployment after that it is rectified by getting a certified letter from a neighbor or someone that knew your situation. It's a pain for some people but it's easily completed.

and if your young with a weak mind and a strong back the oilfields has a place for you driving or not
once your in you can move around easily up the food chain
mom and dad should be happy to spend a few thousand on a career
rather then a couple of hundred thousand then you become a driver anyway..........sigh

I'm not sure how that has any barring on if an employer is required to ask for 10 years of all employment history from the applicant. It just states that an employer can ask for addition information if they want to.

How dose any employer in any industry know if an applicant has lied? They check if they care but this rule does not require that the employer do so.

You are reading things into the rule that are just not there.

Part "d" clearly places the responsibility of the information being complete and accurate on the applicant, not the employer.

No need for the employer to "cover their rear" as the accuracy of the information is the applicants responsibility, not the employers.

This rule places no responsibility on the employer other then what is stated in part "f".

See mavericks application at http://www.maverickusa.com/media/44131/maverick driver app march 2014.pdf or May's requirements at http://maytrucking.com/driverapp/ for examples of companies asking for only 3 years of employment history other then commercial driving history.
