Trainers

The more I look into trucking, the more questions I have. Okay, you can be a company trainer, take people out for a few weeks at a time. How is that paid? Are there perks other than more money per mile? And why not train people yourself? For example, tell someone you'll take them out and train them if they bring a CDL permit and however much money. I suppose insurance would be a big thing there. And for OO's who are company trainers, does the company cover the trainee's insurance or is it something you carry?

These are things that go through my mind when I have way too much time on my paws.

In most cases, company trainers are paid a little extra cpm while they have a student. In addition to this, they are paid for all the miles the truck runs even when the student is driving. When I was a trainer with PAM, this meant about a 70-80% increase in wages depending on the student. As far as calling that a "perk", I'd have to disagree. I did it to make a better living, and to teach someone how to be a true professional. But like all aspects of trucking, it didn't properly compensate me for the work I actually had to do. There were many nights I went with sleeping periods of no more than 2-3 hours. I found it very difficult to get any rest with someone who had only been driving for a few days or less. The first week, I pretty much ran the truck like a solo operation. We might have done 800 miles/day max with me doing about 600 of that. By the fourth week, we were almost running like a team (around 900-1000 miles/day without much trouble) with the student doing about 600.

And at my boyfriend's company, the trainer continues to receive $0.01 cpm for every mile that the former trainee runs for the first year, or until that first accident, whichever comes first. Now that my boyfriend is past the little mailbox incident he laughs that his trainer isn't getting a dime from him. During training, his trainer used to really brag about how much money Mark was earning for him while he slept. So on my boyfriend's very first run, the very day he was given his truck, he ran over a mailbox in the middle of the night. So his trainer didn't earn any money from him at all.

There are two types of trainers, those that need the money, and those that like to teach. I like to teach but I would strangle some of these people, they wont allow me to pick and choose students. Because I would only pick military guys, they can stand up and speak clearly and not do that "bones made of jello" standing.
