Want to get back into the trucking business, I drove for shneider 2008 right before the economy collapsed. Just wondering how much you had saved up and how close you cut it when you first entered the trucking biz.
How broke were you when you entered the trucking business ?

I got $400 from orientation.....without that, I would have lost my house. Yep...cut it a bit to close.
Jtuminelli Thanks this. -
Oh shoot, I had money in the bank, a California State Retirement and an employed wife. It took me several years of trucking to go broke. . .

Big Don and justa_driver Thank this.

Really, it is like anything else. If you have some bucks going into it, you will have a much easier time. But I have known drivers who started out without a pot, or a window, got on board with a mega that financed their training, completed their time of indentured servitude, living in their tractors, and went on to make a decent career. But that is certainly the hard way to go.

Started trucking w 18k, worked for May Trucking and dropped below 5k within 8 months. I have now recovered and make a ok living for what it is.

I was blessed like Big Don. I was already working as was my wife, when I entered the Biz 12 year ago in June.
The employers have been the worst part of it.
The one I stuck to the longest so far (8 years) was the worst one.
The first, I left after 2 years to relocate to the area that the 2nd and longest was located in, as were the wifes parents (why we moved to begin with).
This third company has been a load off my mind, better pay, better dispatch, similar equipment (though it is improving). -
I was collecting $225/week unemployment with $2200/month in bills
