Say I'm coming to a stop. I'm using peterbuilts now and haven't had this issue before but when I'm at a dead stop from a stop sign I'm having a hard time getting it back into first gear. I'm pushing the clutch in all the way to activate the clutch brake.

Start off in 2nd.... One less gear to grab... ; ) Sounds like a clutch problem, not something your doing.. I would have that checked out ASAP.
-
Push the clutch all the way to the floor and wait a second. Clutch brakes are slow in the peterbilt world.
-
I'm in orientation so these trucks are all 800k plus and used and abused 379s.
-
If so, push the clutch as far as you can, then push it another inch. The clutch brakes really dont activate untill you really press um down. If it doesnt go in, try bringing the clutch up slowly as you try to push it in. (to about 1/4 way up). Those training trucks at tmc are ####. The one had/has a broken shifter that spins when you try to split. The rest of their fleet is maintained a bit better. -
Good advice I'll try it tomorrow. only have two days left out of the two week orientation. Was making me mad since he tanked my shifting score when I was doing perfect shifts while moving but grinded it to get it into first at every stop sign and stop light.

Maybe you broke the tabs off of the clutch brake. Go get another one for $25 and put it on.
I thought this was your truck, just read the other replies and I see it is a training truck-so the tabs are probably broken off!! lol -
I takes all of about 2 seconds to destroy a clutch brake and render it useless.

Given that this is the new drivers forum this may take more experience than you currently have to do it properly.
When my clutch brake is being stubborn i will hold it against the gear and slowly release the clutch while holding it right at the tip of the gear. Before the clutch reaches full engagement it will suck the gear selector into the gear your holding it against.
It took me several months of experience before i could hold it close enough to a gear to fall in without actually grinding the gear, but it works well when dealing with poorly adjusted or failing clutches/clutch Brakes.
