Hi there, I want to help go pick up a box truck that has a DOT number.
I am not currently "driving" but have many hours behind the same type of vehicle
I do not have a medical DOT medical card yet because i didn't need it. Previous box truck was a rental and that made it so i didn't need one.
Since this is not a rental I will need one eventually if I ever do want to help out and or drive.

My question I am in PA and bringing from Pittsburgh to Harrisburg. Do I need to have DOT medical card if I am not driving the truck for a job purpose?

The big question is what is the truck used for? Personal use you are okay. If the truck is used in business that will make money then it's a CMV and must abide by the FMCSA and PennDOT rules.

A rental doesn't determine whether you need a medical card or not. If the vehicle is a CMV greater than 10,000 GVWR or a 16 passenger bus or any weight hauling hazmat, then you need a medical card.

If the truck has a greater than 26,000 GVWR then you need a Class B CDL. Look in the door jamb at the label.

The definition of a CMV in short is it used to make money? Anything involving a business is considered making money. Just because they rent it doesn't matter. Now if you rent the truck yourself to move personal property, that is a different story.

    From the PA CDL manual...
You also need a Class C CDL in PA to operate a CMV 26,000 lbs and under GVWR.

Thanks. This truck is personally owned, not by a business, and it WILL be used to make money but not yet. This is just getting it from one place to the next. No money will change hands to get said truck from place to another.

I seen guys put not for hire on the side of their truck when doing this, might want to check with dot or local police and record the conversations if legal in your state.

    CondoCruiser Thanks this.

I take it the DOT # is not yours? Cover it up with tape or something and like morelandoemtp said put a cardboard sign on both sides that is readable at 50 feet, Not for Hire. Then boogie on.
Technically a truck or trailer purchase being routed back to the business base is the freight itself. But they don't know that until the truck is registered with the DOT. So drive on and if anything is said it's for personal use.

Why,not just get a dot medical card. Can be inexpensive at certain times and a fairly quick process. Does this truck have license plates on it? Just put the not for hire on doors and bring it back at 1am when the scale is closed.
