I arrived in Williston, ND on Monday night. There was a chemical fire going on, up the road from my customer. I will always park at the customer if I can. Not this time. Too many firetrucks were in the way and those fireballs going 200 feet in the air might have kept me up all night anyway. So I headed back uptown and parked at Wal-Mart. The area was still evacuated the whole next day.

Here is my question. After I have satisfied my 10 reset obligation, I can log time in the sleeper berth as Off Duty, correct???.

I read 120 pages of a good book while lying on my bunk, while logged 'off duty'.

You can log it however you want. I have never understood why they felt the need to differentiate between off duty and sleeper berth. I am typing this from my sleeper berth, but I'm also off duty, I just happen to be off duty while in the sleeper berth.

To sum up: log however your heart desires and don't lose any sleep over DOT semantics.

Sleeper berth is a trump card.

Example is at shipper -- you are supposed to log on duty: "All time loading or unloading a commercial motor vehicle, supervising, or assisting in the loading or unloading, attending a commercial motor vehicle being loaded or unloaded, remaining in readiness to operate the commercial motor vehicle, or in giving or receiving receipts for shipments loaded or unloaded."

but if you're resting in the sleeper, you can log SB. You cannot log off duty.

There is also the 8/2 rule where 8 or more continuous hours in the sleeper is exempt from the calculation of your 14. Then whenever you take a 2 hour break, you've met the requirement for a 10 hour break.

I wouldn't sweat it unless ya safety department starts to fuss.

Technically, if ya stop for a 10 then go hop in the shower, hit the buffet, casino etc, you're not in the sleeper.. On the other hand, find me a driver that switched SLEEPER to OFF DUTY those three different times he went into the truck stop.

    oh? He doesn't exist...

Really splitting hairs here, but don't the regs say you have to be "resting"in the sleeper berth for it to qualify for sleeper berth time? Darn if I know what the definition of resting is. If you are sharing the sleeper with a hooker, is that resting?

I heard aped another drive say and ask this exact question to a DOT. He said it doesn't matter as long as you are taking your breaks legally there is really no difference. Unless you the driver wants to 8-2 split then SB is needed a consecutive 8 hours to gain back some hours to be able to drive. Then the 2 hour break finalizes it and gives you back the remainder.

Everyone does it. I've had those long hard days where go take a shower eat lay on bed and just fall asleep.
