Which lane has been more trouble For you? The First lane on a 5 lane freeway/4 regular lanes & 1 carpool. Or the Second lane on the same 5 lane freeways. Or 4 lane freeway, or 3 lane freeway. That doesn't matter, but what I mean is do you have more trouble with cars merging into your lane from the left and right, when you're on the second lane? Or you have more trouble with cars merging from your left and those dumb drivers merging from the ramps thinking they can beat you while you're on the first lane? I'm scheduled for orientation with central refrigerated next month and training. I just wanna have the most knowledge I can before all of that. Which lane you ride on most often?

Also if there's a good technique to stay alert with those cars merging into your lane. Other than constantly looking in your mirrors for cars passing you.

Take your time, leave room for them and none of them are a problem. I was born and raised here in SoCal, Handling traffic is not about them. Its about you stay cool in the stool, dont let them ruin your day.

Following distance is everything, and dont fall for the ignorate ideas that you can not leave a good distance between you and the guy ahead of you. Your life and someone elses may depend on it.

I have trouble with using fuel taxes to build HOV lanes that no one uses so they turn them into toll lanes.

Your in California. Trucks must use the right lane. You may use the second lane to pass, but must return to the right lane after passing. IF the roadway has 4 or more lanes, then you may use either of the right two lanes, but if you are blocking the flow of traffic in the second lane, you can be cited.
In California, if you just drive the speed limit, everyone will be passing you, so you will be able to maintain space in front of you. Merging traffic is SUPPOSED to yield to main lane traffic, but we all know it's every man for him/herself, so just let them go. You don't need to constantly watch your right mirror, just concentrate on what's ahead of you.

And you will have a lot of unhappy drivers around you as you wobble along at 55mph... Just be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Yours is good advice, but it's important to understand in some states, including CA, being on a limited access highway does not provide absolute ROW over merging traffic.

OTOH, in OH for example, traffic code does grant absolute ROW to traffic on limited access highways. If traffic is crawling at 0.25 mph you don't have to allow any traffic to merge from an entrance ramp, because those who write OH traffic code are apparently complete and utter morons who think this is still 1964.

For safety reasons, you want to minimize lane changes, because there's more potential for an accident when doing so. I recommend using the number 3 lane (of a 4 lane same direction) because you don't have to worry about merging traffic from an on-ramp. In Ca. you count lanes from the left. # 1 lane is the "fast" lane. However, you also need to be aware of changing lanes when it's necessary. Patience is needed to drive in L.A. If I have 3 million miles under my belt in a truck, I bet 2 million of them are in S. Ca. AM 1070 on your radio has traffic conditions 24/7 and has saved me countless times knowing there's a problem and I can take a different route to avoid it. I would say 99.9 % of vehicles on the freeway system in S. Ca. are there every day and know how the traffic is and deal with it and accept it. Good luck.

Since you'll be working foe swift, your truck will be governed at 62 mph. Stay in the right lane at all times so those of us going the speed limit can pass.

We, in Wisconsin, as other places, I'm sure, don't have the luxury of 4 or 5 lane, in one direction, highways.( not that we couldn't use them) Our bigger cities have 3 lanes, which, I'd always stay in the middle lane, regardless of which is moving the fastest. ( we don't have a left lane law for trucks) and stayed in the right lane on our 2 lane in one direction, highways. I refuse to move over to the left lane(except for trucks) when cars are merging from ramps. Despite horns and "I'm # 1 gestures", it's just better that way.
