A little background...I live in Raleigh, NC. Never had a ticket or accident of any kind (knocks on wood), very good work history (currently a corrections officer for state of NC) and will be going to Roadmaster Driving School starting August 16th for 8 weekend courses, graduating early October. I have identified Cargo Transporters, EPES, TMC, and Tidewater Transit as companies with pretty good reputations that I'd like to apply to. First, when should I start applying to these and other companies and are there companies you would recommend for a new driver who is willing to put in the work?

Thanks in advance for any and all responses..

Get prehire applications out right away so the ball is already rolling and you have recruiter contacts in place so you don't have to do all that running around 2 months from now. You also can begin to narrow things down to less potential employers as well in that time period. I'm not sure about your school, but the school I went to initially had all sort of prehire applications on site for all sorts of trucking companies. Check with the office there to see if they can hook you up with any.

I'm with Schneider and started out with them 3 1/2 years ago. They are at the very least a very good starter company with plenty of freight to keep you moving. Not familiar with the other companies you mentioned too much, except that if you want to run flatbed I think TMC is a very good route to take from what I've heard.

I've been telling students to submit applications the first day of CDL school classes, but the other posters say you can do it earlier. Guess you can get started. The choices you listed all look good; especially Tidewater Transit and TMC.

Tyson foods is excellent. Looks like you're just outside the hiring area, but they hire in Durham. I'd submit an application anyway.

Howard Transportation has a terminal in Kenly.

Ignore "experience required" and apply anyway!

    Melton Truck Lines
    Superior Carriers
    Trimac Transportation
    CTL Transportation
    Schneider Bulk (tanker)
    Saia LTL Freight
    Southeastern Freight Lines
Indian River Transport (want 12 mos. exp. but apply anyway)
    Holland Inc. (Teamsters union)
    Old Dominion
    YRC Freight
