I am in need of advice, I am a soon to be graduate of Truck Driving School and have pre-hires from US Express and Werner, I have selected those two due to their pet policy. They are the only two starter companies in my area (Twin Cities in Minnesota) that allow pets, that is why they are the choices.

I am not looking for a bashing session about these companies, but rather an honest evaluation of the quality of the training available at each. My hope is to go 48 state OTR and run hard. I am single so home time is not really critical but I would like to make an honest wage for an honest days work adn obtain the skills I need to move up the ladder to a medium sized company or a local job.

Please let me know which company you would choose and why.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jeff

That's seriously like asking to be kicked in the balls or kicked in the balls twice. Both are bottom feeders. Werner you will make less than minimum wage and only teams at US Xpress run west.

Your pet won't be with you while training. US Xpress has you with a trainer for 4 weeks, then forces new student hires to team for another 8 weeks. That is 3 months that you won't have your pet.

Pet policies change with companies, so keep looking. Here's some that may or may not have pet policy; in the past they did anyway:

Navajo Express - trucks have APU & inverter installed
    Con-way
    Southern Refrigerated Transport
    WEL
    H.O. Wolding
    Knight

Those are 2 bad companies to drive for, solo at least. Not the worst, but you can do a lot better. If you're willing to team tho, USX.

Hey if you are willing to relocate to Eau Claire, WI the company I am working for is looking for a driver. No experience needed. And you are home every night in your own bed. 5 day work week and you can work 6 or even 7 if you want to. Depending on what part of the cities you are in it would only be a 90 mile or less move. Besides the fact that MN < WI.

This sounds like an EXCELLENT opportunity to look into. Potentially, you could work for this company for a long time. It is definitely worth looking into.

    Good luck.

Unfortunately I am locked into a lease here in St. Paul right now. The buy out is prohibitively expensive so moving right now is not an option.

    THanks for the idea though.

Out of the 2 UXS is the best choice and I have worked for both and actually seen the training side of both. Don't believe the hype about teaming only at USX as the only way to make money. There are other dedicated choices too that you can do OK on. Solo OTR is the least preferred as a new guy, wont make great money in that situation. And teaming isn't always forced although you will make much better money that way. If you like humping freight then you could get on the Dollar tree account near Chicago, they are always looking for more lumpers on wheels and the pay isn't half bad if that's your thing.

Well in any case check out my thread on here about them. Maybe when you are looking to come off the road you will be able to look into it. Oh and by the way, Weiner and Knight both have dedicated positions outta the DC I work for. Maybe something to check into?
