Ok long story short. I suppose to start a 3 week driving school Monday morning to get CDLs and have had Boyd Bros,Schneider and McElroy call me. Schneider seemed to be the most interested in me and gave me the less hassle to hire me and pay my school for training while the other 2 companys wanted me to get all kinds of criminal reports and driving reports and such and one of them 2 wanyed me to find 2 people to even write them a recommendation letter telling them what kinda person I am and such. Well I currently work a 10 hr factory job and im a supervisor at this factory job. Tried to put in 3 day vacation to so could check out the school and then maybe putting in my the rest of my vacation which is 4 more days I have saved up but was denied like usually. Always wanted to drive a truck but heres the thing. Ok school starts Mon and im suppose to go back to work mon Night. Also I don't have my hard copy of my DLs but I do have the paper copy. reordered my DLs Friday of last week and was promised from Nashville that I would get them this time on 7 days cause last time I ordered the hard copy DLs they never came after 40 days. Ok next problem is I cant find my SS card and cant order the SS card till I get hard copy of DLs. Btw my DLs are good just my old copy had a big crack in them and tape was holding them together. I was able to find my birth certificate tho. Ok so I tell the school that I was suppose to be attending Mon about my documents and that I still had 7 gays vacation at my current job and was denied any vacation time. Was gonna giv my current job 1 week notice after my vacation was approved but that didn't work out. So the driving school told me to come to school anyways and told me they didn't care about my current job if I gave a notice or not. Even tho I dislike my current job should I just quit and loose my 7 days vacation which is about 800 to 1000 buks? Driving scool also said that I wouldnt need my hard copy of DL or social security card till CDL test day which is 2 and a half weeks from Mon. that puts me 7 days to hopefully receive my hard copy DLS and 1 week and a half to receive my SS card. had to order a SS card for one of my kids this month and it took exactly 1 and a half weeks..... So that puts me very very close to having all my docs ready for CDL test day IF I went that route. Btw Schneider is waiting on me as well after this 3 week CDL class. What would you do? Cancel the CDL class and catch the next one?And call Schneider tell them im gonna be 3 weeks late? or just take a loss on my 7 days vacation and just quit my current job with no notice and loose 7 days vacation and 800 to 1000 buks? Thanks in advance. Not sure is I can do another 3 weeks at my current job as well.TY:biggrin_25520:

Also im really looking to drive flatbed as in I always been in pretty good shape and want to keep healthy. Don't mind staying on road a lot in my first year. From age 18 to age 30 I worked on the river as a watch engineer staying away from home many weeks at a time sometime working on dredges. my favorite part was traveling to each job site all the down to Venice La all the way up to hickman KY. Learned a lot about doing small repairs and maintenance on diesel engs during that time and turned many wrenches during and after my dredging career. TY once again.

If it were me, I would go ahead and start school now.
Schneider picking up the tab for the school looks real good.
Is Schneider going to place you with their flatbed division? You will make thousands more a year with their tanker division. Tanker work is easy money.

If you really want flatbed though, then look at several companies to make comparisons:

    Keim TS
    Halvor Lines

Falcon Transport has a terminal in Nashville, but don't know how the money is or if they run 48 states.

Hi West, that is kind of a tough one, personally, I wouldn't burn any bridges with your current job, and 800-1000 bucks is still a lot of money ,to me anyway. Of course Schneider is going to want you to hustle along, they need drivers BAD, but If you need a reference down the line, quitting a job with no notice could come back to haunt you. Don't let them pressure you, there's like a million trucking jobs out there, and schools are starting all the time. Do it right, give a notice, and take your vacation pay as a little cushion, and while you are in your notice time, check out other options for school, like I say, there are hundreds of companies looking for drivers now, they need you, not visa versa. Good luck.

Btw they also will be paying me a 2500 dollar sign on bonus during that first year im under contract with them. And doest have to be flat bed. Thanks.

I would stay and get your vacation pay, but go ahead and try to get your vacation approved asap as you don't want to wait forever. Also if you want to get into flatbed I would look into some flatbed companies and see if they would be willing to pay for your schooling or you may have to pay for schooling yourself but in return get on with a better company. For example I bet if 100 new drives went to Maverick and 100 went to Schneider I would think that 95% of the maverick drivers would make more money, be happier with their career choice, more home time, be healthier. This is just my opinion but I would bet your life that I am more right then wrong. Good luck in your decision.

Vacation money does not go away if you quit, they still owe it to you. Collecting maybe another thing.

To leave with or without notice, this sounds like a bridge you may not want to burb just yet.

Getting your cdl, and the first year can be difficult, you may not make enough to float the boat. If you need a check during traing check out PRIME they pay 600 per week while your being trained.

Just look before you leap, you might be right over a sandbar, and get really stuck..

    Just sayin...

Thanks but paying for school myself is not a option right now and really don't see them giving me my vacation time within these next 3 weeks. See my boss hired me a new boss for me to train and he starts mon.....

Driving can be a good living, just not for everyone. Lots of companies looking to take advantage, so look twice, move once, so to speak.
