Ok, Im considering getting my cdl and going over the road. I know that ill have to sign a commitment for x amount of time to pay off the school. And i also know that as a new driver at a big company, ill get the crappy loads and will be gone a lot for the first year or so. Ive never driven a standard vehicle before so that will be an issue for me (i could learn with the right teacher). Is there a company that has autos in their fleet? Also, is there a company that gives you some pay while you're in school? Im considering Prime, USA truck, PAM. What are people's experiences with these companies as a new driver? Any help or tips will be appreciated!

First, you will learn to shift. I didn't know how to either but I picked it up. Don't go with autos. Trust me when I say this. I was where you were, in same mindset, a year ago. Once u learn a stick you will want one.

That being said. Go to your states unemployment office. Ask about WIA. Government grant that.pays for school and everything. Go to private school. Ain't got to pay anything back.

That being said...i am with USA. Came here after 6 months at another company and I love it. Yes im in an automatic but they sold my truck and getting new one tomorrow. Hopefully it is a stick. You can do a lot worse than USA. Stay away from PAM. Had a bunch of friends go there and hated it plus forced teams.

Knight would be best option yet. Look at Crete/Shaffer if you go private school route. Highest paying non flatbed company out there for newbues.

Prime Inc. does provide good training. In my opinion, the training period is way too long.
    Knight also provides good training.

Look at some other options and make some careful comparisons.

    Witte Bros.
Southern Refrigerated Transport-pays for community college CDL school.
    Mid-West Coast Transport

Schneider - sometimes funds private CDL school, then can make real good money in their tanker division.

Prime's training is pretty good, no company will pay you while you only have a permit. However Prime will loan you up to $200 a week while you are in training to get your CDL. Once you pass your CDL test and start getting a check they will take the money loaned out of your check at $25 a week. Once you have your CDL and move to the second phase of training your pay will be $700 a week before taxes if you go through Primes school. Note Prime just raised their training pay from $600 a week to $700 a week. You do have to sign a one year contact but if you say only stay 6 months then you only repay half the cost of the school.
