    Hello everyone,

I have been lurking here for the past few weeks and getting some great information. I have been in the Marines for the past 14 years and in a year I will be done with my service and driving a truck is something that I have kind of always wanted to do. I am a good independent worker and I think I would do well in the industry. I have never driven a truck, biggest thing I have drove was a 32 ft RV pulling my 14ft car through I-77 and it was fun.

Nash Community College in Rocky Mnt., NC has a partnership with SAGE truck driving school. They have 3-4 week program and weekend course which is 7-8 weeks long. Has anyone heard anything about the school out of Rocky Mnt.? I will be able to take the weekend route or take leave and finish the 3 week course before I retire from service. How soon would you recommend I do the school before getting out? I have read more than 45 days after completing training and not driving is frowned upon. I have also read some stuff about the companies such as Prime and Roadmaster and their training seems to be pretty good too. I prefer the SAGE route on being able to be finished with the course prior to getting out of the Corps and my GI bill will be able to pay for it.

Also, does anyone know of any good trucking companies in the Raleigh, Wilmington, Jacksonville, Rocky Mnt, Washington, NC areas that I could research? I am open to do anything. I know I still have a year before I get out but I want to make sure I get as much information as possible before my time gets short.

    Thanks for your time.

Welcome and good luck. NC has some good, cheap schooling options

I dont know much about Sage......Look into NC Truck Driver Training School too. They are in Smithfield, NC at Johnston Community College. They also have a satellite school on Fort Bragg for people getting out of the military.

Also, Sampson County Community College is probably the cheapest ive seen...around $500.....

    Some companies close to Raleigh
TWT, tanker, have eastern nc terminals
    Howard
    Epes
    Cargo Transporters
    McElroy
    Averitt

Thanks, this will keep me busy during my downtime tonight. Do you guys recommend any sites or reading up I can do prior to starting CDL training. I would like to get all endorsements I can. I currently have an Explosives Operators physical, does that carry any weight with anything?

Go to the top of this page and click on "CDL Practice Tests" to study for the CDL and endorsements.
You will still need a DOT physical from a registered doctor; the DMV may have a list of doctors in your area.
Will you live in NC after the military? This is important so we know the hiring area you will live in. It would be best to plan your CDL school graduation about the same time as your release from active duty; better to start work ASAP after graduation.

Tyson Foods is an excellent company and they hire from certain zip codes in NC. Sometimes they go outside that zip code if you ask. Good money avg. $60K & benefits.

Here's a few more good companies to research:

    Schneider Bulk
    Trimac
    Superior Carriers
    CTL Transportation
    Tidewater Transit
    SVTN

Note * Ignore "experience required" on any company website and apply anyway. Companies are hurting for drivers right now and are bending their own hiring rules. Start submitting online applications the day CDL school classes begin.

More than likely I will stay in the Eastern NC area being that my wife and all of her family is from little Washington. Her uncle used to drive trucks, he has a truck shop in just outside of Chocowinity, NC. I thought about spending some weekends with him and helping around the shop and picking his brain. Thank you for all of your help. I sincerely appreciate it.

Semper Fi Jarhead, I'm in Charlotte driving out of Greer,SC for Swift. I don't know how other companies work but my home terminal is Troutdale, OR mainly because I wanted to keep the same driver manager. You can live wherever you want, set your terminal wherever you want, and take home time wherever you want. I'm not pushing Swift, they have plenty of faults but they arent too bad and you get paid on time. I went to Sage in Henderson,CO and felt they did a decent job but your real training will be with whatever company you go with. Hey going by your name are you ordnance? I was 6521 AO

Thanks, I've been researching and have kinda got that the real training you get is during and after orientation with the company that hires you. A few of the companies have a few verterans programs that look really good getting GI Bill pay as well as the company pay check. Thanks for the input, there is a lot I don't know and need to learn if I decide to pursue this for a career. Yes, I am a 6531, squadron ordnanceman! I.Y.A.O.Y.A.S.

HaHa, good stuff, I will be in Yuma Sept thru the end of October for WTI. I am not a big fan of it there. 130 degrees working on Jets on the flightline is not fun.

I was bombing range, which is now a civilian job from what I'm told. Ahhhh those bake-in-an-oven days picking up Mk 76's and throwing them in the back of a pickup I uhhh kinda miss them . I was skinny then maybe thats why
