Hey guys, just want to say this site/forum is great! I have learned alot.
I recently resigned from 7 years in law enforcement. I am looking into becoming a trucker. However, one of the main reasons, is so my wife and I can work together. My question is pretty much, how exactly does the process work? If I apply for a place like CR England or Swift, they send me to their academy. I assume you share a room with other students and stuff. Is it possible at one of these academies, to get my own hotel room (out of my own pocket) so my wife can come with me?
Second is, once I get my license, how will training work? Is there anyway she can come along during training, or will we have to be apart for 5-6 weeks?
Please let me know your ideas and such. Thanks
Switching to a new career, wife tagalong?

training is you and a guy/gal in a truck together for however long the training period is. your wife will not be able to ride along. plenty of time for that after you are on your own.

Stay FAR away from CRE....please!

^^^^This.
Besides, the last thing you need while trying to learn how to SAFELY handle an #80,000 big rig is to be distracted (*cough* nagged *cough*) by your significant other.....LOL -
Oh! I love this post! We already have a lot in common already! I worked Law Enforcement for 10 years and my husband did 11 in the Military and the civilian law enforcement for another 10. We loved our jobs but got tired of the politics, separate department, different shift and decided to get out of it and become truck drivers. First, if your wife is going to go with you, why isn't she going to drive also? You could team drive and make more money. Anyway, we went to Schneider for our training back in 2007. We were able to stay together in the hotel since we were both students. We had separate instructors for the schooling and our OTR training with a trainer was done together. We ended up with a solo driver that had a dedicated route, so my husband would drive and the trainer would be in the jump seat and I would be in the bunk. When I was driving, my husband would be in the bunk. Our trainer was always in the jump seat. At night, our trainer would get a hotel and my husband and I would sleep in the truck.
You mentioned that you and your wife wanted to "work" together, so she may as well go to school to learn to drive with you! As I mentioned about, we went to school with Schneider and then after a year we went over to Prime as lease operators. Prime also has a really good training school. I think either of these would be great choices. Is there a reason that your wife isn't going to get her CDL? -

Yes you can pay for your own room on your own dime but then I have to ask, can you afford training for the both of you outside of a company CDL school?
