Just wanted to give everyone an update on my situation, but first I want to say thank you to all the people here that gave me advise and company leads. I really appreciate it. Now I have to tell you that I'm not going to give up on my journey to become a truck driver, even if most of the companies below will not give me an opportunity. Here is a list of all the companies I applied too and their response: (for those of you that don't know I have a class A CDL for over 7 yrs, but no tractor trailer experience and I was convicted in 2001 for conspiracy to distribute with the intent to sell a control substance. I server some time and came out with probation which I finished in 2008)

    1. WERNER= NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TO RECENT (6 YRS OLD)
    2. KNIGHT = (FIRST TIME JACLYN) YES, BUT NEED 40 HR REFRESHER COURSE (SECOND TIME BRY) EVEN WITH THE REFRESHER COURSE THEY COULDN'T HIRE ME BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TO RECENT; 6 YRS)
    3. ALLIED VAN= STRAIGHT UP NO
    4. SWIFT = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TO RECENT
    5. WATKINS/SHEPARD= GET A 40 HR REFRESHER COURSE THEN CALL US BACK
    6. J.B HUNT= AFTER LEAVING MORE THAN 5 MESSAGES A RECRUITER (RYAN) CALLS ME BACK AND TELLS ME NO BECAUSE OF MY FELONY AND NO EXPERIENCE.
    7. PRIME = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS ONLY 6 YRS OLD TO CALL THEM BACK WHEN THE 7 YRS ARE UP AND I HAVE A TWIC CARD, AND HAZMAT.
    8. CRETE = (NICK)TOLD ME TO GET MIN 4 MONTH OTR EXPERIENCE THEN CALL THEM BACK.
    9. SCHNEIDER = THEY ( JOY) TOLD ME NO BECAUSE I NEED EXPERIENCE. MIN 6 MONTH
    10. WESTERN EXPRESS = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY NEEDS TO BE 10 YRS OLD
    11. TMC = STRAIGHT UP NO BECAUSE OF MY FELONY
    12. STEVENS = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY NEEDS TO BE 10 YRS
    13. TRANS AM = YES, BUT I NEED A 160 HR REFRESHER COURSE (BASICALLY GO BACK TO SCHOOL AND STAR OVER)
    14. CAROLINA CARGO = I NEED TO RELOCATE AND THE CPM WOULD BE .15
    15. CON-WAY = NO BECAUSE I NEED TWIC CARD AND HAZMAT AND IN ORDER TO GET EITHER ONE MY FELONY WOULD NEED TO BE 7 YRS OLD. ALSO SINCE I WAS TAKING CARE OF A FAMILY BUSINESS FOR THE PASS 5 YRS AND GETTING PAID IN CASH. THAT IS AN UN-VERIFIABLE EMPLOYMENT.
    16. NFI TRUCKING = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TOO RECENT.
    17. YRC FREIGHT = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TOO RECENT AND I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE.
    18. TYSON FOODS = NO BECAUSE I HAVE NO EXPERIENCE.
    19. PTL = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TOO RECENT.
    20. RAVEN = STRAIGHT UP NO
    21. EPES TRANSPORT = STRAIGHT UP NO.
    22. MAVERICK = NO BECAUSE OF MY FELONY
    23. PRIDE TRANSPORT = (SPOKE TO JO) NO TRAVEL LANES IN THE SOUTHEAST
    24. CELADON = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY IS TO RECENT, NEEDED TO BE 10 YRS OLD.
    25. COVENANT = NO BECAUSE MY FELONY NEEDS TO BE 10 YRS OLD.

I first applied online and since none of them answered me; I call them and spoke to a recruiter. Every respond I wrote was word for word what they told me. I am not making this up. I have a pad with all this information down so I won't forget which company I have applied to.
I guess they do not believe a person could change. That 40 hr refresher course is too expensive for me to pay and here in NYC they are currently not offering that WIA program. Once again thank you for all the good advise and for giving me company leads. Thank you.
Be good and stay safe out there.

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Good luck in your endeavor to be a truck driver... sorry to hear but there is hope on the horizon, just be a little bit.
From what I have read on this forum, you can try smaller mom and pop places and see how that goes...??? I am sure someone will be on here to shed more light for you... You have a good attitude, I am sure you can find someone who will be willing to give you a shot at redeeming yourself.

Interesting that Schneider told you that. We certainly hire new drivers. They just have to already have their cdl and go through the 3 week training program.

Just a thought here..... In future comms with other companies, you might mention all of the above. It might not make a difference, but it just MIGHT show a prospective employer how serious and persistent you really are.... Like I said, might not make any difference, but it couldn't do any harm, right?

Good luck and hang in there man. You're bound to find something soon. Just keep your chin held high because you are doing the right thing!

So can a background check show exactly how much time you served in prison? Does it also show how much time a person was on probation? I would think unless the employer asked for paperwork from the clerk of courts office showing the judgement and sentence the employer couldnt get detailed information from a standard criminal background check. I wouldn't volunteer so much information unless specifically asked because everyone doesnt go to prison or get probation. Yeah, you made a mistake. However, your conviction was well over 10 years ago.

i'm a little confused on the op's post.

no one will hire him becuase it has to be 6 years. he posts his conviction as being 2001, and completed his probation in 2008.

well, isn't this year 2014???????? making it 13 years.

GO TO YOUR STATES BACKGROUND CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. or whatever it may be called and apply for expungement.
maybe even do a google for your state to see what you can find. but your convition IS 13 YEARS OLD. unless you mistyped.

Dude your felony is 13 years old not 6. A background check is only going to tell them the date of the conviction so that's all you should give them.

I have a felony from 2001 and I am in Celedon's school as we speak.
