Why Speed?

We are still in school but expect to accept a job from GTI. I drive close to 100K a year as a 4 wheeler and have always wondered why most truck drivers speed on the interstates. To me it seems normal for 18 wheelers to do 75 in a 65. Do the police allow it, or do they use radar, or what? It seems pretty stupid to jepordise your job with a ticket.

I have to admit that there are times cops do allow speeding.

TO give an example: Where I work our trucks are governed at 65mph.
They get passed alot during the night hours by other trucks going much faster.
Have been times I heard the drivers tell about the cops sitting along side the highway doing their radar thing and not stopping them.
This happens all the time. Maybe daytime is different.

Thats because they are asleep in the cruiser with the engine idleing and the a/c blowing ice out the vents.

Sure the police use radar,lidar, timing from planes, you name it, the cops will do it. The actual enforcement of the speed limit comes down to the individual officer; some, will write tickets for just a couple of mph over the limit. Others, will let you go well over the limit, especially if you are keeping up with the flow of traffic.

As for why I speed, I know driving the speed limit, especially when NO ONE else is, is dangerous, so I try and keep up with the flow of traffic. IF that means I'm doing 60-63 mph in OH, then so be it, but I do it with the full knowledge that the next cop I come across could write me up.

It comes down to : 'Sometimes you gotta get all you can'.

I know a city cop that doesn't pull anyone until they are doing 10 over.

There are so many possible answers to why truckers speed that I think it would be silly to try and answer this question. Everyone speeds every now and again, unless you are governed of course, and even then you can catch yourself going over in places like Oh. Your not necessarily risking losing your job either, unless you work for a really strict company and have recently gotten numerous speeding tickets.

simple ....i speed cuz then i get to where im goin faster


ok i dont really speed all that much...maybe a few mph over the limit in most states, but i go 5+ mph slower in some states...so it all balances out

remember that these trucks go slow up hill but boy, they can come screaming down

Just came in from my first three weeks and I can say from my limited experience that speeding is rather easy out there. If you just pay attention to the CB, you'll know where every cop is anyway. My trainer even used a radar detector (nice example, huh?) and was even bold (or stupid) enough to leave it stuck to the windshield at weigh stations. And besides, sometimes it's unavoidable -- just try falling off with 79,000+ already knowing you'll need every last horse to climb the other side -- and you might see this a little differently.
