Looking for Advice on the bay area market for box truck loads. I have had it in my mind for a while that a box truck would be a simpler way to get in to the transporting business but not sure if its over saturated. Just trying to get a feel for if its worth it or not and what are the basic requirements to get started (minus the truck) and how do i go about finding loads.

Any and all advice is appreciated!

You're going to need a lot more research than that. You need to know the business more than just seeing them. Sorry.

Box trucks or "straight trucks" are a niche market. You would first need to find your customer base. For instance, Charlie Chan noodle company makes noodles and needs them delivered to their customers in Chinatown (S.F.). The same with Herb's thumb tack co. He needs them delivered to his customer base of 7 hardware stores. YOU need to approach the manufacturer and offer your services. I would suggest you hang out in town observing drivers making deliveries and get names and ask how they get their leads. Many small customers have their stuff delivered Fed=ex. Inquire about furniture delivery and appliance delivery also.

Do cargo vans work the same way? That would seem the cheapest way to get in the industry

Check with LTL companies as well such as DHE in san leandro and RPM in hayward. They both have straight truck owner ops. Also check with furniture warehouses, there are many in the bay area. Check with air freight companies, especially out of SFO

KKW Trucking has a few box trucks for hauling furniture. They also do CDL training. Don't know if they use owner-operators or not. May be a good way to learn something about the business.
