I have been in the army national guard for almost 6 years now. I was wondering if that counts towards work history? I have had a few jobs here and there and also have went to school utilizing my gi bill..I will be going to CDL school here in a few weeks and just want to know if i would be good to go as far as the NG goes. Previously to that i was in the Navy for just over 7 years.

    No worries.
Industry is suffering for bodies so badly that as long as you're not an axe murderer with two speeding tickets you can get a job driving a truck. But two speeding tickets will be the deal breaker.:biggrin_255:

National guard does NOT count towards work history! Brother did NG for eight years and when he did his applications into trucking they would not take it as work history since they couldnt verify his miles. You may be able to put some numbers together that would look at but unless they can verify the numbers with someone alot of companies will not take you. Some do however! Look for companies taking veterans, many of those wave the verification as long as you can prove that your MOS was a driving MOS and that you have an active license through the military. Im talking about OTR and regional jobs though, so local are usually different

That being said, local companies (where you make home every night, like pepsi, coke, and beer companies) will take you on the stop as long as your DMV and background check isnt an issue! If you go to a CDL school, and graduate then its not an issue regardless!

Well, it's "work", but there's part-time NG, and full-time NG. I don't know anything else about the NG, part-time might be 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year for all I know, which isn't really a "job".

I wouldn't worry about it.. Lots of people enter the industry as a last resort after extended periods of unemployment... and about half of them decide within 6 months being unemployed is better.

Just don't lie about your credentials, you can find yourself a long way from home without a ride.

The good thing about going to a CDL school, is that recruiters come there to recruit directly. Most CDL schools have at least 6 to 12 recruiters come before graduation all trying to get you to come to them. Work history generally doesnt mean to much cause the recruiters are looking for work history with trucking companies. So really I would worry about it to much.

work history isn't just for verifying miles, you have to account for your last 10 years regardless of what it was

Whether you have been in school, in the military or anything else, you will need to account for your time. Carriers are required to collect a 10 year work history, regardless of what you were doing. They will check at least the last 3 years and could go back further, depending on what they find. I think Schneider is friendly to the military.
