Had one of those rattling experiences today. Picked up a heavy Budweiser load in Ft Collins today.... 79000lbs....destination Williston ND. I have drove this route before. In Wyoming, I take US85 off of 25. Its a lonely but amazingly beautiful route. Rolling grasslands most of the way. The ol GPS wants to route you on 585 which keeps you in Wyoming longer and you hit another Port of Entry...the 3rd. I went this way last time. Once you get out on 90 east, you get back on US85 all fhe way up to Williston.
Well, i pulled out the trusty Atlas. I see i can just stay on US 85.... why would the GPS route me the other way. I look and see its a truck route and there are no restrictions.
So I stay on US85. GPS says 'OK BUDDY, WE CAN DO THAT' lol
First let me say....amazingly beautiful and scenic route.
But it was hair raising and stressful to no end.... tight windy roads all up hill or down hill.... some hills I had to go 20 to make it up...going down was stressful too. A few 7% 2 mile curvy roads.... had to really concentrate and think about every move...what gear, what speed, when to hit brakes ect.... tight ravines and cliffs and trees...where the hell did the grasslands go!!!! .. it wasnt very much fun.... lol
Well, I didnt smoke the brakes... but when I stopped out near I90 when I finally got down the last hill... I could smell them faintly..... I needed a cigarette and I dont even smoke. I'll be sticking to 585 from now on. Some cool little towns up there id like to check out... but never again in a 18 wheeler!!!!!! After I got to the point of no return...I was real nervous that I missed a *no trucks* sign... but was relieved when I finally passed a truck going the other way...whew..that was stressful!!!!
What are some of your unexpected terrain stories????

Did you take ALT14 up through Spearfish Canyon, or US85 all the way? The canyon is curvy, but much flatter in profile than 85. It's also more beautiful. That said, I'd only go that way when I couldn't visit the gals at Sundance, otherwise 585 is the way to go. And I'm speaking of southbound, too; NB (EB) everyone just blows right by the port.
Skydivedavec and ncmickey Thank this. -
I stayed on us85 the whole way. Where do you pick up alt14 going north? I'll have to look at the altas.
585 is so much different...just right up that long valley with farms and rolling hills. I was taken by suprise with us85....
Good to know about the port...I guess going east your out of Wyoming in few miles anyways...Skydivedavec Thanks this. -
Cheyenne Crossing, I think it is. Not too far after you come down off of Oneill Pass. For years you didn't have to stop at a WY POE if you hadn't picked up in that state, I think they've changed the signage a bit at some of them, but I just keep on trucking like I was on 90 and had cleared the other port the whole time.

Wyoming ports are only for entry on everyone... if you loaded in wyoming, then you are supposed to stop at the port as you exit the state...
Went through the black hills, deadwood is on US 85, the gambling town.... yea twisty hilly road... 585 is so much faster... and now you know why the gps wanted to go that way.
sounds like you did use alt 14 going north.ncmickey Thanks this. -

Now anyone in their right mind would take I-25 north to I-80 west to I-84 to catch I-15 north and THEN take US-89 up the small hill to Logan. Instead my company GPS routed me off of I-80 just west of Little America onto US-30 to Bear Lake, UT and then catch US-89.
It was a gorgeous run all the way to Bear Lake and then that first ascent to a rest area overlooking the lake, with thunderstorms in the late evening sun... wow!
Then it got busy.
US-89 from Bear Lake to Logan is a great run for a car. Not for a truck. It has 8% grades with recommended 15 mph turns and goes through narrow slots where the canyon walls are literally within a couple feet of your trailer on a two lane road filled with RV's, pickups pulling boats, and massive amounts of folks looking for one of the hundreds of camp sites along the road.
I ran that on a Friday night and the road was packed.
Never

Ya done good kid. You are becoming a chauffer as opposed to a steering wheel holder. Good job.
ncmickey Thanks this. -
OP if you want to run that way and not have to stop at three ports run 25 up to 18 at Orin Jct. and then turn right on 270 which is the lance creek highway good running and it's around the Torrington port.
