Here in California your CDL permit expires in 1 year.

Here in CT the permit is good for 6 months and you can get 1 re-new making it good for 1 year.
IIRC if you don't get your license in that year you have to wait 1 year before you can get a 2nd permit.
Now my school preps you for the permit the first 2 weeks of a 22 week course. In the 12th week you hit the field to work with the trucks and we MUST have a med card, permit and school drug test before then.
For you it may be best to reach out to the school you want to go to see when you should get the permit and your state DMV to see how long the permit is good for and how many re-news you get.
Good luck

In arizona cdl permit is good for six months, and they will let you get an extension for another 6 months. After that, you need to take all the tests again. From the time you get your permit here, you need to wait 15 days to do the road test.
